Chapter 8 - When Storms Collide

The hours leading up to midnight were an agonizing blur.

The Falcone estate was buzzing with tactical preparations. Men in tactical gear checked weapons, coordinated communication frequencies, and mapped out the abandoned ironworks facility. Nico was not going alone—he was bringing his elite force, but he intended to enter the main building by himself to keep Salvatore from executing the hostages immediately.

At 11:00 P.M., Nico came up to Milo’s room.

Our son was asleep, his chest rising and falling in a peaceful, steady rhythm. Nico knelt beside the crib, placing a small, golden medallion—his family's crest—under Milo’s pillow. He kissed the boy’s forehead softly, lingering for a long, quiet moment.

He stood up and turned to me. He was wearing a tactical vest beneath a heavy black coat, looking lethal, precise, and completely focused.

"If I don't return by 3:00 A.M.," Nico said, taking a sealed white envelope from his pocket and handing it to me, "Lucian has orders to take you and Milo to a private airfield. You will be flown to a estate in Switzerland under new identities. Everything I own—the wealth, the real estate, the trusts—will belong to Milo and you."

"I don't want your money, Nico!" I cried, slapping the envelope back against his chest. "I want you! I want a father for my son! Don't you dare give me a suicide speech!"

Nico caught my hands, gripping them firmly. "It's not a suicide speech, Claire. It's a contingency. Because for the first time in my life, I actually have something to live for."

He pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss—a promise written in steel and fire.

"Wait for me," he whispered against my lips.

"Come back to us," I begged. "Promise me."

"I promise."

With that, he turned and swept out of the room, his long coat billowing behind him. The sound of heavy black SUVs roaring down the driveway echoed through the estate, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in their wake.

Midnight came and went.

I sat on the floor of the nursery, holding Milo’s tiny hand as he slept, staring at the clock on the wall. 12:30 A.M. 1:00 A.M. 1:30 A.M.

Every tick of the second hand felt like a drop of lead. Outside, a heavy summer thunderstorm broke over the hills, rain pouring down against the high glass windows, lightning illuminating the dark woods in sharp, terrifying flashes.

At 2:15 A.M., the quiet of the house was shattered by distant gunfire outside the perimeter gates.

I sat bolt upright, terror shooting through my veins like ice water.

The estate's alarm system began to wail—a low, rhythmic horn that signaled a breach. Lucian’s voice boomed over the internal comms system: "Secure the inner hold! Teams 3 and 4 to the front gates! It's a decoy attack!"

Moretti hadn't waited for Nico at the ironworks. He had sent a sacrificial team to distract Nico's main strike force, while he personally led a strike team to the estate to take what Nico valued most.

I snatched Milo out of his crib, wrapping him tightly in a thick blanket. He woke up, crying softly, confused by the sirens and the dark shadows.

"Shh, baby, Mommy's got you," I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs as I backed toward the heavy wooden door of the nursery.

Suddenly, the lock on the nursery door shattered with a deafening BANG.
