Chapter 7 - The Echo of a Promise

That night, for the first time in two long years, I didn't sleep alone.

We didn't cross lines into chaos; instead, we lay together on top of the covers, wrapped in each other's arms, listening to the soft crackle of the fireplace and the quiet hum of the night outside. Nico held me tight against his chest, his heart beating a slow, steady rhythm under my cheek, while one of his large hands softly stroked my hair.

"Tell me about him," Nico whispered into the dark around 2:00 A.M. "Tell me everything I missed."

And so I did. I told him about the morning sickness, about the first time Milo kicked, about how he was born during a thunderous rainstorm. I told him about his first steps in the tiny bakery kitchen, how he loved the smell of cinnamon, and how he always fell asleep whenever I sang Moon River.

Nico listened to every word in absolute silence, his hold on me tightening with every detail. I felt the wetness of a single tear absorb into my hair—a quiet, secret sorrow from a man who never showed weakness to anyone.

"I will make it up to him," Nico swore softly into the quiet room. "I will make it up to both of you for every single day I was absent."

"Just stay alive, Nico," I whispered, reaching up to touch his cheek. "That's all we need."

By dawn, the tranquility was shattered.

A loud, abrupt knock echoed against the bedroom door. Nico was instantly awake, his hand instinctively reaching under his pillow for a hidden weapon before his brain even fully processed the noise.

"Enter," Nico commanded, sitting up.

Lucian stepped into the room, his face grim, carrying a tablet computer in his hand. "Boss. We have a situation. Salvatore Moretti just sent a transmission to your private server."

Nico slid out of bed, pulling his shirt on and buttoning it rapidly. "Show me."

Lucian handed over the tablet. I sat up in bed, pulling the blanket around my shoulders, watching Nico's face transform from the soft, tender man who had held me all night back into the ruthless Don of the Falcone syndicate.

Nico stared at the screen, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles jumped in his neck.

"What is it, Nico?" I asked, my voice trembling.

Nico didn't look at me, but his voice was like chipped ice. "Moretti has taken control of the supply docks in the south district. He knows you're here, Claire. He knows he can't get past the estate's defenses. So he's issued an ultimatum."

"What ultimatum?"

"He has taken six of my men hostage, including my old mentor, Don Vito," Nico said. "He wants me to meet him at the abandoned ironworks at midnight tonight. Alone. Or he will execute them one by one on a live stream, and then use every resource he has left to turn this city into a war zone."

"Nico, no!" I scrambled out of bed, rushing to his side and grabbing his arm. "It's a trap! He knows he can't beat you fairly, so he's drawing you out!"

"I know it's a trap, Claire," Nico said, looking down at me with an unreadable expression.

"Then you can't go!"

"If I don't go, he will continue hunting you," Nico said softly, taking my hands and raising them to his lips. "He will drag this war out for years. You and Milo will live in fear, trapped behind stone walls, never able to step into the sun. I will not let my son grow up in a cage."

May you like

"Nico, please..." tears streamed down my face. "We just found each other again. Milo just found his father!"

Nico pulled me into a fierce, tight embrace, burying his face in the crook of my neck. "I promised I would keep you safe, Claire. Let me keep my promise. I will finish this tonight. And then... I am leaving this life forever."
