Chapter 7 - A Family Tested by Fire

Three years passed like a beautiful melody.
Noah was now fifteen, a tall, bright teenager who excelled in his studies and had inherited Arthur’s love for engineering. He spent his free time building complex robotics models and studying for early college entrance exams. Mia was twelve, a vibrant, artistic girl whose paintings filled the walls of the townhouse. She was no longer the quiet, frightened girl from St. Agnes; she was confident, loud, and deeply loved.
Arthur’s health, however, was beginning to decline. His seventy-five years were catching up to him. He walked with a more pronounced limp, and his heart, though filled with love, was growing weaker.
Yet, he never complained. He attended every one of Noah’s science fairs and every one of Mia’s art exhibitions. He was their rock, and they were his joy.
One humid evening in August, the family was asleep when a sudden, sharp smell of smoke drifted through the air vents of the townhouse.
Noah woke up first. His room was filled with a thin layer of gray haze. His heart leaped into his throat.
"Mia! Arthur!" he yelled, throwing off his blankets.
He ran into the hallway. The air was thick and hot. Downstairs, a fire had started in the kitchen—an electrical short in an old appliance—and was quickly spreading up the wooden staircase.
Noah ran to Mia’s room. She was coughing, sitting up in bed, terrified.
"Mia, grab Rusty! Get a blanket and cover your mouth!" Noah ordered, his older brother instincts taking over. He wrapped her in a wet towel from her bathroom.
"What about Arthur?" she cried.
"I’ll get him. Go to the fire escape! Now!"
Noah ran to Arthur’s bedroom at the end of the hall. The door was hot to the touch. He burst inside.
Arthur was on the floor beside his bed, struggling to breathe, clutching his chest. The smoke was too thick for his frail lungs.
"Arthur!" Noah cried, kneeling beside him.
"Noah... go," Arthur gasped, his voice weak. "Take Mia... get out. I can't... my legs..."
"I am not leaving you!" Noah shouted. "You didn't leave us!"
Noah, though only fifteen, was strong from years of running and sports. He hoisted Arthur’s arm over his shoulder, lifting the older man with a strength born of pure desperation.
They stumbled out of the bedroom into the hallway. The staircase was completely engulfed in flames now. The only exit was the window at the end of the hall leading to the fire escape.
Mia was already there, holding the window open, crying. "Noah! Arthur! Over here!"
Noah dragged Arthur toward the window. The smoke was blinding, stinging their eyes and filling their lungs. With Mia’s help, Noah managed to push Arthur through the window onto the metal landing of the fire escape.
Just as Noah scrambled out behind them, a loud explosion rocked the interior of the house as the fire reached the gas lines. Flames shot out of the window, singing Noah’s jacket.
They huddled together on the metal fire escape as the sirens of fire trucks wailed in the distance.
Noah held Arthur tightly, shielding him from the heat of the flames. Arthur was barely conscious, but he reached up, his trembling hand touching Noah’s cheek.

"You... you saved us," Arthur whispered before losing consciousness.
"Hold on, Arthur," Noah pleaded, tears streaming down his face, mixing with the soot. "Please hold on. We need you."
