Chapter 5 - A New Home, An Old Wound

That night, Noah didn't sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Marcus’s threatening smile. He knew he couldn't ask Arthur for fifty thousand dollars. Arthur would want to involve the police, and Marcus would carry out his threat to drag them into court, potentially destroying the adoption process.
Noah decided to do the only thing he thought would protect his sister and Arthur.
He decided to run away.
At 3:00 AM, Noah quietly packed his old school backpack. He put in a change of clothes, his parents’ photograph, and a small pocket knife his father had given him. He left the expensive warm clothes Arthur had bought him, putting on his old, worn-out coat instead.
He crept down the hallway to Mia’s room. He stood by her bed, watching her sleep peacefully, hugging a stuffed golden retriever Arthur had bought her, which she had named "Rusty" after the dog in the wallet photograph.
Tears streamed down Noah’s face. I'm doing this to keep you safe, Mia, he thought. If I'm gone, Marcus has no leverage. He won't care about just you. Arthur will keep you safe.
He slipped a handwritten note under Mia’s pillow, then walked down the stairs. As he reached the front door, a voice spoke from the darkness of the living room.
"Going somewhere, Noah?"
Noah gasped, spinning around.
Arthur was sitting in a large armchair by the dead fireplace. He wasn't wearing his glasses, and he looked incredibly tired. He had a mug of warm milk in his hands.
"I’ve lived a long time, Noah," Arthur said softly, standing up and walking toward the boy. "I know the look of a boy who is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. You didn't eat dinner, you wouldn't look me in the eye, and you’ve been pacing your room all night."
Noah lowered his head, his shoulders shaking as he began to sob. "I have to leave, Arthur. I have to go."
Arthur walked over and gently took the heavy backpack off Noah’s shoulders, setting it on the floor. He then pulled the boy into a tight embrace.
"Tell me," Arthur whispered. "Whatever it is, we face it together. That's what a family does."
Between gasps and tears, Noah poured his heart out. He told Arthur about Marcus, the threats, the fifty thousand dollars, and his fear of being torn away from the only home he had loved since his parents died.
Arthur listened quietly, his face growing solemn but showing no fear. When Noah finished, Arthur wiped the boy's tears with his handkerchief.
"Noah, look at me," Arthur said, his voice as solid as iron. "Your uncle is a bully. He feeds on fear. But he made one grave mistake."
Noah sniffled. "What?"
"He underestimated how much I love you and Mia," Arthur said. "He thinks this is about money. He thinks I am a weak old man. He is wrong. Tomorrow, we will meet him. But we won't be paying him a single penny of hush money."
"But the courts—"
"I have Richard, who is one of the best attorneys in this state," Arthur said with a reassuring smile. "And more importantly, I have the truth. Marcus abandoned you. He has no legal standing, and his attempt to extort us is a felony. We are going to put an end to this, Noah. Together."

For the first time in twenty-four hours, Noah felt the icy grip of fear begin to loosen. He looked at Arthur and saw not an old, fragile man, but a fortress.
"Now, go back to bed," Arthur said gently. "Tomorrow, we show your uncle what happens when you try to threaten a Bennett."
