Chapter 4 - The Ash and the Inheritance

The word fire dropped into the car like a live grenade.

Maya and Lily stopped playing with their matching bracelets. Julian closed his eyes for a long, agonizing moment, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.

"The Cedar Street apartments," Julian murmured, more to himself than to me. It wasn't a question.

My head snapped up. "How did you...?"

"I own the structural engineering firm that handled the city's investigation of the block," he said, opening his eyes. They were dark, swimming with a grief that mirrored my own. "The arson report. The missing tenants. They told us everyone was accounted for."

"They lied," I said bitterly, the memories rushing back with suffocating force. "Or they didn't look hard enough under the rubble. I lost everything, Julian. My apartment, my job, my husband's belongings... and then, when the insurance fraud claims blamed us for it, I lost my name. I became a ghost."

Julian reached out across the space between us. For a second, I thought he was going to touch my face, but instead, he placed his large, warm hand over my freezing, calloused knuckles.

"You are not a ghost," he said fiercely. "And you are going to eat, and you are going to sleep in a real bed, and tomorrow, we are going to fix this."

The car turned through a set of wrought-iron gates that opened automatically, gliding up a long, curving driveway lined with towering pine trees laden with snow. Ahead stood a massive, beautiful estate illuminated by warm golden lights. It was breathtaking, yet it radiated a strange, echoing loneliness—a house that desperately needed life brought back into its halls.

When the car stopped, Julian opened my door. As I stepped out onto the paved stone walkway, the front door swung open, and an elderly woman with silver hair and a kind, lined face hurried out with a steaming mug and a thick woolen robe.

"Good heavens," the woman gasped, rushing straight toward me. "Mr. Vance, where on earth did you—oh, poor child."

May you like

"Mrs. Gable, this is Clara," Julian said, gently draping the robe over my shivering shoulders. "She's coming to stay with us. Prepare the east guest suite immediately, and bring the hot broth down to the kitchen."

Mrs. Gable didn't ask questions. She took one look at my tragic state, nodded firmly, and gave my shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Welcome home, dear."
