Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s Gambit

The Bellini estate in the Adirondacks was a fortress of stone, glass, and steel, nestled on a private peninsula surrounded by a freezing mountain lake. Highly trained private security guarded every gate, cutting-edge surveillance monitoring every inch of the perimeter.

For two days, Elena and the twins lived in the safety of the estate. For Leo and Maya, it was an wonderland—sprawling rooms, a heated indoor pool, and a father who spent every spare moment away from his legal team sitting on the floor playing with train sets and reading bedtime stories.

Elena watched from the doorways as Marco transformed. The formidable, unyielding billionaire melted into a devoted father at the touch of his children's tiny hands. He learned their favorite foods, learned how to smooth Maya’s hair when she was tired, and listened with rapt attention as Leo explained the mechanics of his toy digger.

On the night before the Manhattan shareholder summit, Elena walked out onto the stone terrace overlooking the dark, glassy lake. The cool night air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine.

A heavy blanket was placed gently over her shoulders. She turned to find Marco standing beside her, holding two glasses of red wine.

"They're sound asleep," Marco said, handing her a glass. "Leo tried to negotiate staying up an extra twenty minutes, but I held the line."

Elena chuckled softly, taking a sip of the wine. "He gets his stubbornness from you."

They stood side by side in comfortable silence for a moment, listening to the soft lap of the water against the rocks below.

"I’m sorry, Elena," Marco said suddenly, his voice quiet, heavy with sincerity. "For not protecting you three years ago. I was so focused on expanding the company, so obsessed with proving myself to my father’s memory, that I didn't see the snakes in my own garden."

Elena turned to look at him. The moonlight illuminated the sharp angles of his face, the pain and longing clear in his eyes.

"I was angry at you for three years, Marco," Elena admitted, her voice trembling slightly. "I hated you. I spent every night telling myself that I didn't need you, that my life was better without you. But sitting here, seeing you with Leo and Maya... seeing how much you love them..." She paused, taking a breath. "I realized I wasn't just mad at you. I was grieving the life we were supposed to have."

Marco stepped closer, closing the distance between them. He reached out, his long fingers gently touching her chin, lifting her face to look into his eyes.

"We can still have it, Elena," he whispered, his thumb lightly brushing across her lower lip. "If you’ll let me back in. Not just for the kids. For us."

Elena’s breath hitched. The memory of his touch, his love, flooded her senses, drowning out three years of bitterness. Before she could answer, Marco’s security chief stepped out onto the terrace, his face grim.

"Boss," the chief said softly. "The trap is set. Arthur just signed the proxy paperwork in New York. He’s taking the bait."
