Chapter 6 - The Safehouse in the Sky

The private helicopter sliced through the stormy skies above West Virginia, carrying them away from the burning wreckage of Elena’s former life toward a private estate tucked deep in the Adirondack Mountains of New York.

Inside the quiet, luxurious cabin of the aircraft, the twins had finally succumbed to exhaustion, sleeping soundly under thick cashmere blankets on the leather bench seats.

Elena sat across from Marco, wrapped in a dry jacket he had provided. A warm mug of coffee sat untouched in her hands. The adrenaline of the escape had faded, leaving behind a profound, hollow exhaustion and a dizzying storm of emotions.

Marco watched her intently, his hands resting on his knees. "They look like you when they sleep," he said softly, breaking the long silence. "The shape of their faces... your nose."

Elena looked down at the sleeping children, a faint smile touching her lips despite the nightmare they were in. "Maya has my personality. She’s quiet, observant, loves drawing. Leo... Leo is you. Headstrong, brave, refuses to go to bed until he knows every door is locked."

Marco smiled, a soft, heartbroken sound escaping his chest. "I missed three years. I missed their first words. Their first steps. The first time they laughed."

"You didn't choose to miss it, Marco," Elena said quietly, the truth finally settling into her spirit. "I left. I didn't give you a chance to explain."

"You saw what looked like the ultimate betrayal from the two people you trusted most," Marco said, leaning forward. "You reacted to protect your heart. I don't blame you, Elena. I blame myself for letting toxic snakes like Arthur and Julia anywhere near our life."

"What happens now?" Elena asked, meeting his gaze. "We can't run forever."

"We aren't running," Marco replied, his voice shifting back to the cold, decisive edge of a master strategist. "We are setting a trap. Arthur thinks I'm scrambling, trying to hide. He doesn't know that my legal team is filing for an emergency injunction in Manhattan Federal Court tomorrow morning, presenting Julia’s sworn confession and the forensic financial audit."

"And the board meeting?"

"The annual Bellini shareholder summit is in two days," Marco said, his amber eyes burning with a dangerous light. "Arthur called for a vote of confidence to permanently remove me as CEO and declare the estate masterless. He thinks he’s going to walk into that boardroom and take everything my father built."

Marco reached across the small table, gently placing his hand over hers. His touch was warm, sending a familiar spark through her veins that three years of separation hadn't managed to extinguish.

"I’m going to let him think he’s won," Marco whispered. "And then I’m going to walk into that room and destroy him completely."
