Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the Past
The divorce was finalized six months later.
Because of the forged signatures and financial fraud committed by Alex and Beatrice, the court declared our prenuptial agreement completely void. Mariana was awarded a substantial court judgment drawn from the remaining liquidated assets of the Villarreal estate, as well as full restitution for medical bills and legal fees.
Furthermore, state prosecutors officially dropped all criminal charges against me, citing overwhelming evidence of self-defense against domestic violence.
With the legal nightmare behind me, I used part of my settlement money to purchase a small, elegant office building in the Montrose district of Houston. I opened my own firm: Ramos Forensic Auditing & Financial Consulting.
I wanted to help small businesses, honest families, and victims of corporate manipulation protect themselves from predators like the Villarreals.
My first major client was Arthur Sterling.
"You have a brilliant mind, Mariana," Arthur said as we sat in his sunlit library, drinking tea. "My estate needs an auditor who cannot be bought, intimidated, or fooled. You saved me millions by spotting the title errors on the Westheimer property."
"You saved my life, Arthur," I replied warmly. "If you hadn't hired Evelyn, I might still be in a cell."
"Nonsense," Arthur chuckled, setting down his cup. "Evelyn merely opened the door. You were the one who walked through it and demolished their house. You saved yourself."
My parents came to the grand opening of my office. My mother cried tears of pride as we hung the new brass sign on the door, and my father squeezed my shoulders.
"Look at you," my father whispered. "Standing on your own two feet."
That night, as I unpacked boxes in my new office, I found a small velvet box inside my purse. I opened it.

The police had recovered it from Regina’s purse during the fraud investigation and returned it to me. I slipped it onto my wrist. It felt warm, light, and perfectly right.
