Chapter 3 - The Benefactor’s Hand

The person standing behind my legal defense was Arthur Sterling.

Arthur was an eighty-year-old billionaire philanthropist and the former majority partner of Villarreal Enterprises before Beatrice’s late husband ousted him through a series of fraudulent corporate maneuvers twenty years ago. Arthur had watched the Villarreal family build their fortune on stolen ideas, breached contracts, and the quiet destruction of anyone who stood in their way.

When news broke that Alex Villarreal’s new bride from East Houston had been arrested for throwing hot oil at him, Arthur immediately recognized the pattern of abuse and cover-ups. He sent Evelyn Vance to pull me out of the system.

"You are not going to prison, Mariana," Evelyn declared as we sat in her high-rise office overlooking downtown Houston after my bail was posted. "The grand jury reviewed the camera footage. Given Alex's initial strike—which constitutes domestic assault—and the psychological torment documented by the camera's audio, the prosecutor has downgraded the criminal charges significantly, and we are pushing for a full dismissal based on self-defense."

"What about Alex?" I asked, touching the faded bruise on my jaw.

"He was discharged from the hospital with severe scarring on his chest and neck," Evelyn said, sliding a folder across the desk. "He’s furious. Beatrice is demanding a divorce settlement where you leave with zero dollars, take full public blame, and surrender any rights to joint property."

I opened the folder. Inside were financial documents detailing the Villarreal family’s real estate holdings, construction permits, and off-shore accounts.

"They think you’re a helpless girl from East Houston who will crumble under pressure," Evelyn continued. "They don’t know that you hold a master's degree in forensic accounting from the University of Houston, or that you spent three years auditing commercial real estate before you met Alex."

A cold, calm energy settled over me. Before I met Alex, I had been an ambitious auditor. I had given up my career because Alex convinced me that his family needed me to manage their personal foundations. It had all been a trap to isolate me.

"They want a war?" I said, looking Evelyn dead in the eye. "Let’s give them one. I don't want their money, Evelyn. I want their empire dismantled."

Evelyn’s smile grew wider. "Arthur Sterling will be delighted to hear that. First step: we file for divorce on the grounds of severe cruelty, domestic battery, and fraud. Second step: we audit the prenuptial agreement."

That evening, I returned to my parents' home. My mother threw her arms around me, crying, while my father held my hand tightly. Their small home felt warmer and grander than Beatrice’s cold mansion ever had.

"They thought they could crush you because we don't have money," my father said softly. "They forgot who raised you."

That night, I sat at my old desk, pulled out my laptop, and began analyzing every document Alex had ever asked me to sign during our six-month courtship.
