Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at Dawn

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the financial district of the city was waking up to a digital earthquake.

Arthur Vance sat at his expansive mahogany desk on the top floor of the Rivergate Administration Tower, sipping an espresso and watching the rain patter against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. His phone buzzed with the confirmation code for his private jet charter. Thirty minutes, and he would be airborne, leaving the crumbling mess of Rivergate General far behind him.

The heavy oak door of his office swung open.

Arthur didn't look up immediately, assuming it was his secretary bringing the final expense reports. "Leave them on the counter. And hold all calls. I'm out of here in ten minutes."

"You aren't going anywhere, Arthur," a cool, smooth voice replied.

Arthur froze. He raised his head.

Standing in the center of his office, casually leaning against the edge of a leather sofa, was Elena Marsh. Behind her stood two men in immaculate dark suits, and blocking the doorway was Dante Vance himself, his hands resting in his pockets, his face carved from cold, unyielding stone.

Arthur scrambled backward in his ergonomic leather chair, his face turning the color of skim milk. "You—you're the nurse from the fourth floor! How did you—what are you doing in my office? Security! Security!"

"Security isn't coming, Arthur," Elena said, walking slowly toward his desk and placing a thick manila folder right on top of his expensive espresso cup. "They're currently downstairs cooperating with the state banking commission and the federal tax fraud division."

Arthur stared at the folder, his hands trembling as he reached out and flipped it open. Page after page of encrypted bank transfers, offshore shell company registries, embezzlement logs, and transcripts of his communications with the Chicago syndicate stared back at him in black-and-white clarity.

"This—this is forged!" Arthur stammered, sweat beading on his forehead. "You can't prove—where did you get this?"

"Your private laptop was backed up to the hospital's cloud network," Dante said, stepping into the room, his voice echoing like rolling thunder. "A network that my security team decrypted in twenty minutes. You thought you were clever hiding your thefts behind charity write-offs, Arthur. But you forgot one simple rule of the modern world: everything leaves a trail."

"Who... who are you?" Arthur whimpered, looking up at the towering crime boss with eyes wide with primal terror.

"I am the man whose daughter you put on a target list," Dante said softly, leaning down over the desk until his face was inches from Arthur's. "And you are going to pick up that phone, call the board of directors, confess to every cent you stole, every document you falsified, and every leak you provided to the syndicate—or I will let Nurse Marsh decide what happens to you next."

Arthur looked at Elena. She didn't smile. She simply looked at him the way she looked at a hopeless medical chart before writing the final diagnosis: with absolute, unfeeling clinical detachment.

"I'll confess," Arthur choked out, his hands shaking so violently he could barely lift the desk phone. "I'll sign whatever you want. Just don't let him touch me."

Elena turned away from the desk, walking toward the window to watch the city skyline break through the morning clouds.

"It's over," she whispered to herself.
