Chapter 4 - The Stare-Down at the Station

Elena did not flinch. She had spent five years dealing with terrified parents, arrogant surgeons, and aggressive drug addicts in the ER; a crime lord glaring at her like she was an enemy combatant was intimidating, but it didn't change the protocols.

"Her care was authorized by Dr. Wexler and overseen by the pediatric department," Elena said, her voice steady, matching his low register so the other nurses down the hall wouldn't panic. "And as for who is paying for this room—nobody is. She's a ward of the state under temporary pediatric observation because her mother hasn't signed the discharge papers or returned our calls in four days."

Dante's eyes narrowed. "Her mother is dead."

Elena caught her breath. The piece clicked into place with a sickening thud. "Four days ago... the accident on the coastal highway?"

"A hit," Dante said flatly, the admission slipping out before he could check it. He caught himself, his jaw locking again. "She was running. She was trying to keep Lily safe from people who wanted to hurt me by hurting them. And they found her."

He stood up slowly, towering over Elena once more. The physical contrast between them was stark—the massive, dangerous architect of a criminal empire and the slender, exhausted nurse in a white uniform who had spent her morning arguing about bed assignments. Yet neither yielded an inch.

"I am taking my daughter out of this hospital," Dante said, a statement of absolute fact, not a request.

"No, you aren't," Elena countered instantly.

Behind them, the young intern gasped, and Viola Reyes, who had apparently abandoned the front desk and taken the stairs, materialized at the end of the corridor like a ghost appearing in a graveyard.

"She has an active IV drip of broad-spectrum antibiotics for a suspected kidney infection," Elena said, ticking the facts off on her fingers with clinical precision. "Her white blood cell count is still elevated. If you pull that line out and walk out those doors with her, she will go into septic shock within six hours. You might be able to buy every doctor in this city, Mr. Vance, but money doesn't filter bacteria out of a six-year-old's bloodstream."

Dante stared at her. For three agonizing seconds, the air between them crackled with lethal potential. One word from him, and his armed guards downstairs would be up the stairwell. One word from him, and Rivergate General would become a crime scene.

Instead, Dante looked down at Lily, who was tugging gently on his sleeve, whispering, "Daddy, my tummy hurts."

The mafia boss's face contorted with a spasm of helpless agony. He looked back at Elena, the fierce, protective predator stripped away, leaving only a father staring at a wall he couldn't punch his way through.

"Save her," Dante said, the words dragged out of him like iron filings pulled by a magnet. "Whatever it takes. Whatever equipment, whatever specialists, whatever price—save my daughter. And if she doesn't make it... this building won't either."

"She's going to make it," Elena said coldly, stepping past him to kneel beside Lily. "Because I'm her nurse, Mr. Vance. And unlike the people in your world, I don't negotiate with infections."

Viola Reyes, standing quietly twenty feet away, gave a microscopic nod of approval.
