Chapter 5 - The Confession in the AshesThe wind whipped across the rail yard, carrying the scent of damp earth and river water. Adrian stood frozen, unable to tear his gaze away from Benjamin. The accusation hung in the heavy air between them, suffocating and undeniable.

"I didn't pay them off, Ben," Adrian whispered, the defense sounding hollow even to his own ears. "I was terrified. The audit was coming. We were bankrupt. If the company went under, we would have lost everything we worked for since college."
"So you let the fire finish the job?" Benjamin asked, his voice chillingly calm. "Or did you lock the heavy iron security bolt from the outside before you ran for help, just to make sure the financial records inside the safe couldn't be recovered by the investigators?"
Adrian gasped, stumbling backward as if struck. The secret he had locked away in the darkest corner of his mind—the memory of turning that heavy iron bolt in a moment of sheer panic and greed—flashed back with blinding clarity. He hadn't known Benjamin was trapped inside the back office at that exact moment; he had only wanted to protect the safe containing their fraudulent debt logs. But when the flames erupted instantly afterward, he had realized what he'd done. And instead of calling for a rescue crew to check the back, he had stayed silent.
"I... I didn't know you were in the back room," Adrian choked out, tears finally breaking free and cutting tracks down his face. "God help me, Ben, I didn't know."
"I know you didn't," Benjamin sighed, looking out toward the dark, rushing river. "If you had known, you wouldn't have lived with this torment for sixteen years. I watched you from the shadows, Adrian. I watched you donate millions to charities, build schools, and rescue stray companies. You were trying to buy absolution for a ghost you thought you murdered."

Adrian dropped to his knees on the cold gravel, the weight of his guilt finally crushing his pride entirely. "Destroy me, then. Go to the authorities. Take the company, take the money, take my life. I've lived in a prison of my own making every day since."
Benjamin walked slowly over to the kneeling billionaire, looked down at him for a long moment, and then reached down, placing a warm, heavy hand on Adrian's trembling shoulder.
