Chapter 2 - The Lockdown and the Baker's Confession

Maisie tilted her head, her tiny brow furrowing as she tried to reconstruct the memory. The ballroom remained dead silent. Two hundred people held their breath, the atmosphere shifting from festive celebration to chilling tension.

“He said... ‘The white frosting hides everything. Make sure he cuts it himself,’” Maisie whispered, her voice echoing faintly through the high-ceilinged room.

Declan’s face did not change expression, but the temperature in his eyes dropped several degrees. His gaze flicked upward, locking onto his head of security, Graham Shaw. In the underworld, Declan was known as a man who read between lines that others didn't even see. He trusted his instincts, and more importantly, he knew that a three-year-old had no concept of fabrication or malice.

Graham didn't need a verbal command. With a sharp nod, he motioned to two armed guards stationed near the arched service doors.

“Nobody leaves the estate,” Declan said softly, his voice carrying an authority that commanded absolute obedience. “Lock all perimeter gates. Cut the external comms lines except for local secure channels. Graham, bring me the head pastry chef and anyone who had access to that delivery in the last two hours.”

Panic rippled through the crowd. A prominent city councilman stepped forward, his face flushed with nervous indignation. “Declan, surely you aren’t disrupting a room full of distinguished guests because of a toddler's imaginative—?”

Declan stood up slowly, towering over the politician. He didn't raise his voice, but the look he gave the councilman silenced him instantly. “If there is a bomb, or poison, inside my son’s birthday cake, Councilman, every single person in this room is a potential suspect or a potential victim. Stay where you are.”

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She pulled Maisie tighter against her skirt, suddenly terrified that they were standing in the epicenter of a warzone. She had taken this job because the pay was generous and she needed to support her daughter after her husband’s tragic, unsolved accident two years prior. She had never imagined that the quiet opulence of the Callahan estate masked such immediate, lethal dangers.

Graham Shaw moved quickly, disappearing into the kitchen corridor. Within moments, heavy footsteps approached. Graham returned, flanked by two guards who were dragging a pale, sweating man in a white chef’s jacket.

It wasn't the head chef. It was a young assistant baker named Leo, whose hands were visibly shaking.

“Boss,” Graham said grimly, letting go of the baker’s shoulder so that Leo stumbled forward onto the marble floor. “We found him trying to slip out the side staff exit with a burner phone and a passport.”

Declan walked over to the cake. The white ocean waves frosting looked pristine, beautiful, and utterly innocent. But as Declan reached out and gently scraped away a corner of the top tier with his bare finger, a sharp, chemical scent rose into the air—a scent that had nothing to do with vanilla or sugar.
