Chapter 7 - The Final Reckoning

The presence of the federal marshals in the study seemed to drain the last remaining ounce of fight from Patricia’s body. She looked at the polished steel badges, then down at the legal documents resting on the desk, and finally up at me with a look of pure, unadulterated venom that laid bare the true darkness of her soul.

“You think you’ve won, Julian,” she hissed, her voice dropping to a low, venomous rattle as she pulled her designer handbag tight against her body. “Richard and his associates aren't going to just roll over because of a few domestic security cameras and some fancy paperwork. Vance Global is rotting from the inside, and without me to guide your blind eye, you’ll lose everything you’ve ever built!”

“Richard is currently being detained at his corporate office by federal agents on charges of wire fraud and corporate espionage,” Pendelton stated calmly, not even looking up from his legal folio as he neatly squared the edges of the documents. “As for your role in the conspiracy, Miss De Luca, you are being served with an immediate federal and civil restraining order prohibiting you from approaching Mr. Vance, his daughters, his corporate offices, or any of his properties under penalty of immediate incarceration. Your personal belongings will be packed by security and shipped to a forwarding address of our choosing. You will never set foot in this city again.”

The lead federal marshal stepped forward, placing a heavy hand near his holster as he gestured toward the door. “Ma’am, I suggest you walk out of here quietly with us. We have a lot of questions to ask you regarding those offshore accounts, and it’s best if we do this down at the federal building.”

Without another word, Patricia turned on her heel, her head held high in a pathetic, last-ditch display of pride, and marched out of the study flanked by the federal agents. The heavy oak doors swung shut behind them with a solid, echoing thud that sounded like the final nail being driven into a very deep, very secure coffin.

When the exterior doors of the foyer echoed with the sound of the marshals' vehicle pulling away down the driveway, the suffocating tension in the study finally evaporated, leaving behind a profound, cleansing stillness.

I let out a long, ragged breath that I felt like I’d been holding for months. My shoulders dropped, and the heavy iron weight that had compressed my chest since Patricia first planted her seeds of doubt finally lifted.

“Well done, Arthur,” I said, turning to shake the lawyer’s hand firmly. “You executed that masterpiece of a trap without a single flaw.”

“It wasn't a trap, Julian,” Pendelton smiled faintly, adjusting his silver glasses. “It was simply reality catching up with a fraud. But more importantly, you’ve secured your home and your children's future. That’s what truly matters.”

After Pendelton packed his briefcase and departed through the service gate, I stood alone in the study for several minutes, looking out at the sunlit rose garden through the pristine glass. The storm had passed, the air was clean, and the shadows that had choked my household for months had been completely swept away.

Marcus walked back into the study, carrying a fresh cup of black coffee which he handed to me with a respectful nod.

“Everything is secured, Mr. Vance,” Marcus reported. “Patricia’s personal effects are being packed into storage boxes right now under my direct supervision, and her access codes to the estate’s security network have been permanently revoked. She won't ever be able to log back in.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, taking a sip of the warm coffee. “And please... bring Rosa and the girls down to the living room. It’s time we had a real family meeting.”
