Chapter 5 - The Morning After

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds, casting long, golden beams across the manicured lawns of the estate as if yesterday’s storm had never happened. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my private master bedroom suite, freshly shaved and dressed in an immaculate charcoal-grey bespoke suit. The fake suitcase I had carried out the door yesterday afternoon sat neatly unpacked in the walk-in closet, a silent monument to the deception that had saved my family.

At exactly nine o'clock, the internal intercom chimed softly. It was Rosa.

“Mr. Vance?” her voice whispered through the speaker. “She’s up. She’s having coffee in the sunroom, and she just checked her calendar. She’s talking to her notary on the phone right now, confirming the ten o'clock appointment in your study.”

“Thank you, Rosa,” I replied smoothly. “How are the girls?”

“They’re eating breakfast with me in the kitchen, sir. I told them you’re back and that today is a very special day. Daniela is smiling, and Martina even asked if they could watch a movie later without anyone yelling.”

“Tell them they can watch whatever they want, and tell them Daddy will be down to see them right after a very important meeting in the study.”

“Understood, sir. Good luck.”

I clicked off the intercom, took a deep, centering breath, and walked out of my suite down the grand staircase. The house was quiet, smelling faintly of fresh coffee and polished mahogany. As I approached the double doors of my private study, I could hear the faint, melodic clicking of high heels against the marble floor of the adjacent hallway.

Patricia rounded the corner, dressed in a stunning cream-colored designer dress that radiated elegance and innocence. When she saw me standing by the study doors, she froze mid-step, her coffee cup nearly slipping from her manicured fingers.

For a single, panicked second, the mask slipped, and I saw absolute, unadulterated terror flash across her eyes.

“Julian?” she gasped, her hand flying to her chest in a theatrical display of shock. “You... you’re back? But I thought your conference in Zurich wasn’t supposed to wrap up until Thursday!”

I forced my face into a warm, welcoming smile—the very picture of an affectionate, trusting fiancé—and stepped toward her, opening my arms slightly.

“The meetings concluded a day early, sweetheart,” I said smoothly, watching her eyes dart nervously around the hallway as she scrambled to regain her composure. “And besides, I missed you too much to stay away.”

Patricia forced a brilliant, radiant smile onto her face, though I could see the slight tremor in her lips as she stepped forward to allow me to kiss her cheek.

“Oh, Julian... what a wonderful surprise!” she cooed, her voice dripping with syrupy sweetness. “I’m so glad you’re back safe. Actually, your timing couldn't be more perfect. We have our consultation with the legal amendment team at ten o'clock right in here, remember? For the secondary trusts?”

“Of course I remember,” I said, stepping past her to open the heavy oak doors of the study. “In fact, I’m looking forward to it very much. Please, come right in.”

Patricia stepped into the study, her posture straightening as she assumed her usual air of cool, calculated superiority, completely unaware that she was walking directly into a execution chamber of her own making.
