Chapter 4 - Breach of the Fortress

The air in the master suite seemed to drop ten degrees. The quiet sanctuary we had built over the last few hours shattered instantly under the weight of Marcus’s words. Lorenzo didn’t panic; instead, his posture shifted into that of a lethal general preparing for immediate urban warfare. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a chilling, razor-sharp focus that made my skin crawl.
“How?” Lorenzo demanded, his voice a low, vibrating growl as he snatched the encrypted phone from Marcus’s hand. He scanned the data scrolling across the screen, his dark eyes narrowing. “We kept Leo’s condition strictly confidential. Only the core medical team and our trusted inner circle knew he was feeding again.”
“It wasn't a leak from inside the mansion, Boss,” Marcus replied, breathing heavily, casting a nervous glance toward me. “It was the hospital records. When Hunter was admitted to Saint Jude’s three weeks ago under her legal name, her file was flagged in the primary database because of an administrative error linking her room to the VIP annex security grid. Moretti’s cyber unit just scrubbed the hospital’s archived server logs. They cross-referenced every mother who lost a child that night with our known estate staff roster.”
Lorenzo’s hand tightened around the satellite phone until the plastic casing creaked under the immense pressure of his grip. He turned his gaze slowly toward me, and for a terrifying second, I thought he might regret bringing me into the inner sanctum of his world. But there was no suspicion in his eyes—only a fierce, protective urgency.
“Pack a go-bag,” Lorenzo ordered Marcus, his tone absolute. “Activate Protocol Red across the estate. Double the perimeter guards, deploy the sniper teams to the north ridge, and ready the armored SUV in the underground hangar. We are moving.”
“Moving? Where, Boss?” Marcus asked, blinking in surprise. “The estate is the most fortified compound on the East Coast.”
“It’s fortified against an outside assault, not an internal leak,” Lorenzo snapped back, walking over to the crib where Leo was beginning to stir, whimpering softly at the sudden commotion. Lorenzo scooped his son up with practiced, surprisingly tender ease, cradling the baby against his broad chest. He looked at me, his hand reaching out to firmly grasp my arm. “Moretti knows Hunter is here. That means this house is no longer a sanctuary. They will come for the baby, and they will use her to get to him.”
My legs felt like lead, terror washing over me in cold, paralyzing waves. “Moretti… the man who killed your wife? The man whose men might have caused my son’s death?”
“The very same,” Lorenzo said, his voice hard as iron. “And I promise you, Hunter, before this night is over, everyone who had a hand in what happened at Saint Jude’s will answer to me. But right now, we survive.”
Before I could answer, a dull, concussive thud echoed from deep beneath the earth—a sound so powerful it rattled the crystal chandelier hanging from the vaulted ceiling.
Marcus cursed loudly, pulling a suppressed Glock from his waistband. “That wasn't thunder! That was the eastern security gate!”
“They’re already here,” Lorenzo said, his face darkening into a mask of pure fury. He didn't hesitate for a single second. He pulled a heavy, custom-engraved Sig Sauer pistol from a hidden holster beneath his vest, checked the magazine with a practiced click, and thrust it toward me.
I stared at the weapon in sheer horror, shrinking back against the armchair. “I… I don't know how to shoot!”
“You don't need to be a marksman,” Lorenzo commanded, grabbing my hand and forcing the heavy steel grip into my palm, wrapping my trembling fingers around the stock. “You just need to point it at anyone who isn't me or Marcus and pull the trigger. Do you understand me, Hunter? Your life and my son's life depend on it.”
“Boss! The power grid just went down!” Marcus yelled as the overhead lights flickered violently and died, plunging the sprawling master suite into total darkness save for the pale moonlight pouring through the windows and the red emergency backup strips glowing along the baseboards.
“They’ve cut the main transformer,” Lorenzo muttered, cursing under his breath. He stepped in front of me and Leo, shielding us with his own body as the distant sound of automatic gunfire echoed faintly from the lower courtyards. The war had breached the gates of the Rossi mansion.
“Follow me,” Lorenzo ordered, keeping his voice low and steady despite the chaos erupting around us. “There is a subterranean evacuation tunnel beneath the walk-in closet that leads directly to the boathouse on the sound. From there, we have a speedboat waiting.”
We moved quickly through the dark corridors of the suite. The mansion, usually a quiet, immaculate palace, now echoed with the shouts of armed guards barking orders, the heavy boots of the Rossi enforcers running down the marble halls, and the unmistakable, terrifying pop of silenced gunfire echoing up from the grand staircase.
Lorenzo kicked open the heavy mahogany door of the walk-in closet, shoving aside racks of designer suits and silk dresses to reveal a hidden steel keypad set into the wood-paneled wall. He punched in a twelve-digit code with one hand while keeping his pistol raised with the other, shielding Leo against his chest with his left arm.
Clang.
A heavy steel panel slid silently sideways into the wall, revealing a dark, descending stone staircase illuminated by dim amber emergency bulbs.
“Go,” Lorenzo urged, pushing Marcus down the stairs first to secure the descent. He turned to me, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that burned away my fear, replacing it with a strange, fierce adrenaline. “Hunter, take my hand. Do not let go, no matter what happens.”

I gripped his warm, calloused hand, clutching the heavy pistol in my other hand as we stepped into the dark tunnel. But just as Lorenzo reached back to seal the steel door behind us, a blinding flash of light tore through the master suite bedroom, accompanied by a deafening roar that blew the heavy closet doors off their hinges.
“Grenade!” Lorenzo shouted, throwing his body over me and Leo as a massive shockwave of heat, shrapnel, and pulverized drywall slammed into us from behind.
