Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

The sun began its slow, majestic descent over the Long Island coastline, painting the evening sky in brilliant strokes of violet, burnt orange, and deep gold. Out on the expansive stone patio overlooking the private gardens and the sparkling waters of the sound, the Rossi estate was alive with the soft, elegant hum of celebration.
It was a crisp autumn evening, exactly three years to the day since the night my life—and Lorenzo’s—had changed forever.
Tonight, there were no guards standing with nervous tension at the perimeters, no encrypted satellite phones buzzing with emergency alerts, and no shadows of rival syndicates lurking in the dark. Tonight was strictly for family, chosen bonds, and new beginnings.
Lanterns flickered softly along the wrought-iron railings of the terrace. A string quartet played classical melodies from the corner of the courtyard, mingling with the sound of laughter and clinking crystal glasses.
Marcus stood near the banquet tables, awkwardly balancing a miniature tuxedo jacket while trying to keep an eye on four-year-old Leo, who was currently attempting to steal a strawberry tart from the dessert tier while his younger brother Matteo cheered him on as the getaway driver.
I stood inside the master dressing suite, looking at my reflection in the full-length antique mirror.
I wore a floor-length gown of ivory silk, elegant and simple, hugging my silhouette gracefully. My hair was swept up in soft curls, pinned with a diamond-encrusted hairpiece that Lorenzo had gifted me that very morning—an heirloom from his mother, symbolizing that I was the true matriarch of the Rossi family.
The heavy oak door swung open silently, and Lorenzo stepped into the room.
He was dressed in a classic tuxedo, his broad shoulders filling out the jacket perfectly, the silver tie neatly knotted beneath his sharp collar. When his dark, piercing eyes met mine in the mirror, his breath hitched, and the formidable mafia boss stopped dead in his tracks.
He walked up behind me slowly, his heavy, reassuring hands resting gently on my bare shoulders, his chin coming to rest softly against the side of my neck.
“You take my breath away, Hunter,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “Every single day.”
I turned around in his embrace, wrapping my arms around his neck, looking up into the eyes that had once terrified me, but now held the entirety of my universe.
“You’re not supposed to see the bride before the ceremony, Mr. Rossi,” I teased softly, a bright smile playing on my lips.
“Technically, we renewed our vows last year in a private chapel in Tuscany, so I make the rules,” Lorenzo chuckled softly, his arms tightening around my waist, lifting me slightly off the floor before setting me gently back down. He rested his forehead against mine, his gaze turning solemn and profoundly tender. “I was thinking about today… about how far we’ve come.”
“Me too,” I whispered, my voice softening. “Sometimes it feels like a dream—that we survived all of that darkness.”
“It wasn't a dream, Hunter,” Lorenzo said firmly, his thumb brushing my cheek. “It was destiny. You were meant to walk through those nursery doors three years ago. You were meant to save my son, just as he was meant to bring you back to life. You healed the broken pieces of my world, and you gave me a family when I had nothing left to lose.”
“We healed each other, Lorenzo,” I corrected him softly.
He smiled, a rare, breathtaking smile that belonged to no one else in this world but me. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box. He flipped it open, revealing a stunning, custom-designed diamond pendant shaped like an intertwining vine of ivy and roses—representing resilience, survival, and eternal life.
“To our past, our present, and our forever,” Lorenzo whispered, lifting the pendant and fastening it gently around my neck.
“Are you ready, Papa?”
A small, high-pitched voice piped up from the doorway.
We both looked down. Little Leo stood in the doorway, dressed in a miniature black tuxedo that matched his father’s, holding little Matteo’s hand. Leo looked up at us with big, bright eyes, grinning ear to ear.
“The guests are waiting, and Marcus says the cake is ready!” Leo announced importantly.
Lorenzo laughed out loud, scooping both boys up into his arms in one swift, magnificent motion, and extended his free hand toward me.
“Come on, Mrs. Rossi,” Lorenzo smiled, his eyes shining with absolute, unbridled joy. “Our family is waiting.”

I placed my hand in his, feeling the warmth of his fingers interlocking securely with mine. As we walked out onto the sunlit terrace together, surrounded by laughter, music, and the bright, unbreakable future we had built with our own hands, I knew the story had finally reached its true destination.
Happily ever after.
