Chapter 6 - The Storm Before the Dawn

The trip to the lake was a chaotic, beautiful adventure. Marcus pushed, pulled, and hoisted the heavy wheelchair over tree roots and muddy patches, laughing the entire way. When they finally reached the water's edge, the view was breathtaking. The sun danced on the water, and the air smelled of pine and fresh earth.

But the joy was short-lived. As they prepared to head back, a sudden spring storm rolled in with terrifying speed. Lightning cracked across the sky, and a torrential downpour turned the dirt path into a treacherous slide of thick mud.

Marcus struggled to push the chair uphill against the heavy mud, his feet slipping with every step. Suddenly, a violent gust of wind caused a large tree branch to snap above them. Reacting on pure instinct, Marcus lunged forward, throwing his body over Emily to shield her as the heavy branch crashed down.

The branch struck Marcus squarely across his back. He collapsed to the ground with a painful groan, losing consciousness as the rain poured over them.

“Marcus!” Emily screamed, panic gripping her chest. She looked at her friend lying motionless in the mud. She was alone, paralyzed, and helpless in a raging storm.

For years, Emily had accepted her helplessness. But in this moment, seeing the boy who had saved her soul lying injured because of her, a dormant, powerful force awoke inside her. She screamed for help, her voice cutting through the thunder, refusing to let despair win this time.
