Chapter 9 - A New Blueprint

Six months later, the waiting room of the hospital physical therapy department looked entirely different.

Sophie was sitting at the front desk, completely healthy, kicking her soccer-cleated feet lazily as she waited for her father to pick her up after her weekly check-in visit (which she insisted on keeping, mostly to check up on my workflow).

The hospital community board near the entrance no longer featured makeshift dating applications. Instead, neatly pinned in the center, was a brand-new architectural blueprint designed by Jack Morgan Associates: a brand-new, state-of-the-art pediatric rehabilitation wing for the hospital, complete with bright colors, interactive recovery stations, and a dedicated play area.

And in the corner of the architectural rendering, neatly signed by both Jack and me, was a small, playful sketch of a red stamp that read: APPROVED FOR LIFE.

The door slid open, and Jack walked in, holding two strawberry smoothies and a bouquet of fresh flowers. He caught my eye across the room, giving me that familiar, slow smile that had once seemed so rigidly controlled, but now felt entirely like home.

Sophie hopped off her chair, grabbing her soccer ball. “Come on, Dad, Emily! We’re going to be late for practice!”

As we walked out of the hospital together into the bright, beautiful afternoon sunshine, hand in hand, I knew that life didn't always need a strict blueprint. Sometimes, the best designs were the ones you never saw coming.
