Chapter 7 - The Final Evaluation

Monday morning arrived with a bright, crisp autumn sun streaming through the hospital windows. The therapy room was unusually crowded. Not only was Jack standing in his familiar corner, but Elena was sitting next to him on a folding chair, holding a camera and nervously twisting a tissue between her fingers.
And, of course, there was Dr. Evans, the head of orthopedics, who had requested to observe Sophie’s final clearance.
I stood at the end of the parallel bars, holding a clipboard and a stopwatch.
“Alright, Sophie,” I said, offering her an encouraging smile. “Are you ready?”
Sophie took a deep breath, dropped her cane onto the mat, and looked down the length of the room. There were no parallel bars today. No supportive straps. Just an open floor leading straight to her father.
“I’m ready,” she said clearly.
“Whenever you’re ready, start the timer,” I instructed.
Sophie stepped forward. Her left leg wobbled slightly, just for a fraction of a second, drawing a collective held breath from the room. But she caught her balance, her core tightening, her posture straightening with fierce determination.
One step. Two steps. Three steps.
Jack crouched down a few yards away, holding his arms open, not rushing her, simply anchoring her in place with his steady gaze. Elena clicked her camera softly, tears streaming down her face as she captured every single step her daughter took toward independence.
With a final, triumphant push, Sophie crossed the finish line and threw herself directly into her father’s arms.
Jack caught her, lifting her up in a tight, breathless embrace as laughter and cheers erupted in the room. Dr. Evans clapped loudly, and Elena hurried over to press a kiss to the top of Sophie’s head.

I clicked the stopwatch, looking down at the time. I wrote PASSED across the evaluation form in bold letters.
“Well,” Dr. Evans announced, beaming. “It official. Doctor’s orders: this young lady is cleared for soccer season.”
