Chapter 5 - The Final Choice

The envelope felt heavier than it should.

Richard Harrison held it in trembling hands, unable to breathe.

The faded paper had survived twenty-five years.

The seal remained unbroken.

No one spoke.

Not Ethan.

Not Emily.

Not Thomas.

Even Detective Ross, who had finally caught up with the group through the tunnel, stood frozen.

Only the distant sound of dripping water echoed through the underground passage.

Richard slowly looked at Ethan.

"I never saw this before."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"I've heard that before."

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I know."

Thomas stepped forward.

"Open it."

No one moved.

Thomas repeated himself.

"Whatever is inside..."

"...it has controlled our lives for twenty-five years."

"It ends tonight."

Richard carefully slid one finger beneath the brittle seal.

The paper cracked.

He unfolded the document.

Everyone waited.

His eyes scanned the first line.

His face turned pale.

Emily whispered,

"What does it say?"

Richard couldn't answer.

Instead...

He handed the report to Ethan.

Ethan stared at the faded laboratory logo.

His heartbeat thundered in his ears.

PATERNITY ANALYSIS

He skipped to the final paragraph.

Then...

Everything around him disappeared.

His hands began shaking.

Emily gently touched his shoulder.

"Ethan?"

He looked up.

His voice was barely audible.

"It says..."

He swallowed hard.

"Richard Harrison..."

"...is not my biological father."

Silence.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Richard slowly sat down on the cold tunnel floor.

A strange mixture of relief and heartbreak crossed his face.

For twenty-five years...

He had believed he might have abandoned his own son.

Now he learned that wasn't true.

Yet somehow...

The truth hurt even more.

Ethan continued reading.

Another name appeared farther down the page.

One none of them expected.

Biological Father: Jonathan Carter.

Thomas frowned.

"Jonathan?"

Richard looked up immediately.

"Sarah's husband."

Thomas nodded slowly.

"They secretly married after Sarah disappeared."

Emily looked confused.

"But Ethan said..."

Thomas sighed.

"Sarah never wanted Ethan to know."

"Why?"

Thomas looked at Richard.

"Because she never stopped loving you."

Richard closed his eyes.

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

Detective Ross suddenly interrupted.

"Wait."

He took the report.

"This test was performed..."

He checked the date.

"...three months before Sarah died."

Thomas nodded.

"She knew."

Ross frowned.

"So why hide it?"

Richard answered quietly.

"To protect everyone."

Emily looked at him.

"How?"

Richard stood.

"If Sarah had told me..."

"I would've spent my life chasing her."

"And Victor would've destroyed everyone."

At that exact moment...

A slow applause echoed through the tunnel once again.

Victor Lang stepped from the shadows.

This time...

He wasn't alone.

Half a dozen armed men surrounded him.

Victor smiled.

"Beautiful."

"After twenty-five years..."

"...everyone finally knows the truth."

Ross immediately raised his pistol.

"Drop your weapon!"

Victor laughed.

"My dear detective..."

"I don't carry guns."

He looked toward Ethan.

"I carry information."

Victor slowly walked closer.

"No more family secrets."

"No more lies."

He looked directly at Richard.

"You've suffered enough."

Richard's expression hardened.

"What do you want?"

Victor smiled.

"Ownership."

"Of what?"

"The Harrison Group."

Emily laughed in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

Victor shook his head.

"Not anymore."

He reached into his briefcase.

Inside were legal documents.

Original stock certificates.

Signed contracts.

Everything Richard thought had disappeared decades ago.

"You remember signing these?"

Richard looked horrified.

"No..."

Victor nodded.

"You signed them..."

"...the night Sarah disappeared."

Richard whispered,

"I was drugged."

Victor smiled wider.

"Exactly."

Ross frowned.

"So all this..."

"...was about a company?"

Victor looked disappointed.

"No."

"It was about control."

He slowly turned toward the group.

"You still don't understand."

"I never wanted the money."

Emily stared.

"Then what?"

Victor's smile disappeared.

"I wanted Richard to lose everything."

Richard finally looked him in the eyes.

"Why?"

For the first time...

Victor's calm expression cracked.

"Because your father destroyed mine."

Silence.

Everyone stared.

Victor's voice became cold.

"Forty years ago..."

"My father built Harrison Construction."

Richard frowned.

"That's not true."

Victor shouted,

"It is!"

"He trusted your father."

"He invested everything."

"And your father stole the company."

Richard slowly shook his head.

"No."

"My father bought the business legally."

Victor laughed bitterly.

"That's what you've always believed."

Thomas suddenly spoke.

"He's lying."

Victor looked at him.

"Am I?"

Thomas reached into his coat.

"I found something in Sarah's storage unit."

Everyone turned.

Thomas unfolded another document.

Hidden inside the blueprint.

A handwritten letter.

Sarah's handwriting.

Richard recognized it immediately.

Thomas began reading.

"Richard..."

"If anything happens to me..."

"Never blame yourself."

"Victor threatened me because he wanted your company."

"He forged documents."

"He lied to everyone."

"Please don't let him destroy another family."

The tunnel fell silent.

Victor's smile disappeared.

Ross stepped forward.

"It's over."

Victor sighed.

"You think so?"

He snapped his fingers.

One of his men grabbed Emily.

A knife pressed against her throat.

Richard shouted,

"No!"

Victor calmly adjusted his tie.

"One final decision, Richard."

He tossed a pistol across the floor.

It slid to Richard's feet.

"You can shoot me."

"Or..."

He looked at Emily.

"...watch your daughter die."

Time seemed to stop.

Richard stared at the gun.

Then at Emily.

Then at Victor.

His hands trembled.

For years...

He had dreamed of confronting the man who ruined his life.

Now the moment had come.

Victor smiled.

"Choose."

Richard slowly picked up the pistol.

He aimed.

Victor spread his arms.

"Do it."

Emily cried.

"Dad, don't!"

Richard's finger rested on the trigger.

He could end twenty-five years of pain.

One bullet.

One second.

One choice.

Then...

He lowered the gun.

Victor looked surprised.

Richard quietly placed the pistol on the ground.

"I'm done letting you decide who I become."

Victor's smile faded.

"You've learned nothing."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"I've finally learned everything."

The distraction lasted only a second.

But it was enough.

Ethan charged forward.

He slammed into the man holding Emily.

Ross fired.

Another attacker dropped.

Thomas swung a metal pipe.

Daniel tackled another masked man.

Chaos erupted inside the tunnel.

Victor tried to escape.

Richard grabbed him.

For the first time in twenty-five years...

The two old enemies stood face to face.

Victor whispered,

"You should've killed me."

Richard answered,

"No."

"I'm going to let you live..."

"...with the truth."

Ross placed handcuffs on Victor.

"It's over."

Victor looked around.

Every one of his men had surrendered.

He laughed softly.

"You won."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"We all lost."

Three Months LaterThe Harrison estate looked very different.

The birthday decorations were gone.

Instead...

The backyard was filled with children.

Richard had sold part of his company.

The money funded a charitable foundation in Sarah Carter's name.

Its mission was simple:

Helping single mothers and abandoned families rebuild their lives.

Emily became the foundation's director.

Daniel returned to manage the family business—with honesty and transparency.

Thomas finally found peace after decades of guilt.

Detective Ross received a promotion for exposing one of the city's largest corruption cases.

Victor Lang was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, fraud, conspiracy, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice.

As for Ethan...

He visited Sarah's grave one final time.

Richard stood beside him.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Richard said,

"I'm sorry..."

"...for every year you spent believing I abandoned your mother."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"I know."

Richard smiled sadly.

"I wasn't your father."

"No."

Ethan looked at the fresh flowers resting on Sarah's headstone.

"But you were the man she loved."

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

"I'll spend the rest of my life trying to deserve that."

Ethan extended his hand.

Richard looked at it.

Then shook it firmly.

Not as father and son.

But as two men finally freed from twenty-five years of lies.

As they walked away from the cemetery, the sun broke through the clouds for the first time in days.

The shadows of the past had not disappeared.

But they no longer controlled the future.

Some secrets destroy families.

Some truths save them.

And sometimes...

The greatest act of courage is not seeking revenge—

but choosing forgiveness.

The End

The front gate exploded inward.

Boom!

Glass shattered.

Margaret screamed.

Daniel grabbed a fireplace poker.

Ross drew his service pistol.

"Everyone stay behind me!"

The mansion's emergency generator kicked in.

Dim lights flickered.

Footsteps echoed throughout the first floor.

Someone was already inside.

Crash!

A dining room window shattered.

Two masked men climbed through.

Ross fired once.

Bang!

One attacker fell.

The second disappeared into the hallway.

Ethan grabbed a heavy chair.

Another man burst through the kitchen door.

Ethan swung.

The chair exploded against the attacker's shoulder.

The man crashed to the floor.

Thomas shouted,

"More coming!"

Richard suddenly remembered something.

"The tunnel!"

Emily looked confused.

"What tunnel?"

"This house was built over an old wine cellar."

"There’s an escape passage."

Daniel stared.

"You never told us?"

"I never thought we'd need it."

Richard pushed aside an antique bookshelf.

A hidden stone staircase appeared.

"Hurry!"

Margaret helped Emily descend.

Thomas followed.

Ross stayed behind.

"I'll hold them off."

Richard grabbed his arm.

"You'll die."

Ross smiled.

"Maybe."

"But not before you get out."

Gunfire echoed upstairs.

Boom!

Boom!

Boom!

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Ross barricaded the library doors.

The attackers slammed against them.

Richard looked back one last time.

"Thank you."

Ross nodded.

"Go!"

The hidden door closed.

Darkness surrounded them.

The tunnel stretched beneath the estate for nearly three hundred feet.

Cold air filled the narrow passage.

Only Richard carried a flashlight.

Emily walked beside Ethan.

Neither spoke.

Finally she whispered,

"I'm sorry."

Ethan looked at her.

"For what?"

"My family."

Ethan shook his head.

"This isn't your fault."

Before she could answer...

Richard suddenly stopped walking.

Everyone nearly collided.

"What is it?"

Richard pointed ahead.

The tunnel exit...

Was already open.

Someone had reached it first.

A slow clap echoed through the darkness.

Clap...

Clap...

Clap...

An elderly figure stepped into the flashlight beam.

Perfectly tailored suit.

Silver hair.

Walking cane.

Calm smile.

Victor Lang.

He had been waiting.

"Good evening, Richard."

Nobody moved.

Victor smiled warmly.

"It took you twenty-five years."

Richard clenched his fists.

"You murdered Sarah."

Victor laughed.

"No."

"I simply..."

"...moved the pieces."

Ethan stepped forward.

"Where is the safe?"

Victor smiled at him.

"Still asking the wrong question."

He raised one finger.

"The safe doesn't matter."

"The fire doesn't matter."

"The company doesn't matter."

Everyone stared.

Victor's smile slowly widened.

"The only thing that has ever mattered..."

He looked directly at Ethan.

"...is who your real father is."

Silence.

Emily looked at Ethan.

Richard froze.

Thomas's face turned white.

Victor chuckled.

"You've all been chasing the wrong mystery."

He slowly reached into his coat.

Instead of a weapon...

He removed an old DNA report.

Yellowed with age.

Still sealed.

Victor tossed it onto the ground.

"No more lies."

"No more guesses."

"The answer has been waiting for twenty-five years."

Richard hesitated before picking it up.

His hands trembled.

The envelope bore one handwritten name:

ETHAN CARTER

And beneath it...

One chilling sentence.

PATERNITY TEST – CONFIDENTIAL

Richard looked up—

But Victor was already gone.

Only the echo of his footsteps lingered in the darkness.

Ethan stared at the sealed envelope.

No one dared open it.

Because everyone knew...

May you like

Once the seal was broken...

Their lives would never be the same.
