Chapter 3 - The Truth Behind the Fire

The drive to the storage facility took less than twenty minutes.
Yet to Emily, it felt like hours.
Rain continued to pound against the windshield as Ethan maneuvered his black sedan through the nearly empty streets. Thomas sat silently in the passenger seat, while Emily occupied the back seat, unable to stop thinking about the phone call.
Someone had broken into Sarah Carter's storage unit.
Not years ago.
This morning.
The same morning after Ethan had confronted Richard Harrison.
It couldn't be a coincidence.
Someone else knew about the key.
Someone else was looking for whatever had been hidden inside.
The storage facility stood on the edge of the industrial district.
Rows of gray metal buildings stretched into the distance beneath dark clouds.
Police cars were already parked outside.
Yellow tape surrounded Building C.
A nervous manager hurried toward Ethan.
"Mr. Carter?"
"Yes."
"I'm terribly sorry."
"What happened?"
The manager swallowed hard.
"Someone cut through the security fence around four this morning."
Emily looked around.
"No cameras?"
"There were."
He pointed upward.
"They disabled every single one."
Thomas exchanged a worried glance with Ethan.
"This wasn't random."
The manager nodded.
"The thieves ignored every other storage unit."
He hesitated.
"They came straight for Unit Seventeen."
Emily felt chills.
"The same number..."
Ethan quietly reached into his pocket.
The silver key.
Number 17.
A police detective approached.
He introduced himself as Detective Michael Ross.
"Are you the owner?"
Ethan nodded.
"I inherited it after my mother's death."
Ross studied him carefully.
"You said no one had opened this unit in almost twenty years?"
"That's right."
Ross frowned.
"Interesting."
"Why?"
"The thieves forced the lock..."
He paused.
"...but they didn't take anything."
Emily looked confused.
"Nothing?"
Ross nodded.
"Everything inside is untouched."
"Then why break in?"
Ross answered quietly.
"They were looking for something specific."
Ross cut the police tape.
"You can have a quick look."
Ethan inserted the silver key.
Click.
The old lock opened smoothly.
For a moment, no one moved.
Then Ethan slowly rolled the metal door upward.
Dust filled the air.
Sunlight slipped inside.
The room was surprisingly small.
Just a few wooden shelves.
Several sealed cardboard boxes.
An old suitcase.
A bicycle covered with a faded blanket.
A rocking chair.
And dozens of photo albums.
Emily expected something dramatic.
Instead...
It looked like the forgotten belongings of an ordinary woman.
Thomas smiled sadly.
"Sarah never threw anything away."
Ethan knelt beside the first box.
Inside were baby clothes.
Tiny blue socks.
A small knitted blanket.
A stuffed rabbit.
Emily's eyes softened.
"She kept everything."
Thomas nodded.
"She believed one day she'd need them."
Ethan carefully opened another box.
Inside were notebooks.
Diaries.
Letters.
Medical records.
Thomas suddenly froze.
"Wait."
He pointed toward the back wall.
"That wasn't there."
Everyone turned.
A section of the concrete wall had been smashed open.
Fresh dust covered the floor.
Detective Ross walked closer.
"It looks like the thieves knew about this."
Behind the broken concrete...
A small steel safe had once been hidden inside the wall.
Now...
It was gone.
Emily whispered,
"So they found what they wanted."
Ross nodded.
"They didn't come for the storage unit."
"They came for the safe."
Ethan looked devastated.
"My mother never told me about a safe."
Thomas rubbed his forehead.
"She probably wanted to protect you."
Emily looked around again.
"There has to be something they missed."
For nearly an hour they searched every box.
Nothing.
Until Emily noticed something unusual.
The old rocking chair.
One of its legs seemed thicker than the others.
She crouched beside it.
"Thomas."
"What?"
"Did Sarah ever repair this chair?"
He shook his head.
"No."
Emily tapped the wooden leg.
It sounded hollow.
Ethan immediately grabbed a screwdriver from a nearby toolbox.
Within seconds he removed a small wooden cap.
A rolled piece of paper slid onto the floor.
Everyone stared.
Thomas carefully picked it up.
It was a blueprint.
A blueprint of an old house.
One room had been marked with a red circle.
Underneath, Sarah had written three words.
"Don't trust Victor."
Silence filled the room.
Emily looked at Richard's old friend.
"Who's Victor?"
Thomas's face drained of color.
"No..."
"What?"
Thomas whispered,
"Victor Lang."
The name meant nothing to Emily.
But Ethan immediately recognized it.
"My mother's lawyer."
Thomas nodded slowly.
"He handled all her legal paperwork."
Emily frowned.
"So?"
Thomas looked sick.
"He was also..."
He hesitated.
"...Richard Harrison's business partner."
At Harrison Construction, Richard was staring at an old newspaper clipping hidden inside his desk drawer.
The headline read:
LOCAL FIRE DESTROYS LAKESIDE PROPERTY
Twenty-five years earlier.
One person missing.
No body recovered.
Richard folded the newspaper just as Daniel entered.
"Dad."
Richard quickly hid it.
"What is it?"
Daniel looked nervous.
"The police just called."
Richard's face tightened.
"What happened?"
"They found someone dead."
Richard stood instantly.
"Who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"A security guard."
Richard froze.
"Where?"
"The storage facility."
Back at the storage building...
Detective Ross answered another phone call.
His expression changed immediately.
He looked toward Ethan.
"I need everyone to step outside."
"What happened?"
Ross hesitated.
"We've just found another crime scene."
Emily's heartbeat quickened.
"Where?"
Ross pointed toward the rear parking lot.
Behind several shipping containers.
A security guard lay motionless.
Covered with a white sheet.
Thomas closed his eyes.
"Oh God..."
Ross looked at Ethan.
"He was killed around four this morning."
"The same time as the break-in."
Ross nodded.
"And according to the coroner..."
He paused.
"...he surprised the intruders."
Emily suddenly remembered something.
"The cameras."
Ross looked at her.
"They disabled them."
Emily shook her head.
"No."
"What?"
"The cameras outside."
She pointed toward a nearby gas station across the road.
"They couldn't disable those."
Ross immediately smiled.
"Good catch."
Within minutes, officers obtained the surveillance footage.
Everyone gathered around a laptop.
At 3:57 a.m., a black SUV entered the facility.
Four masked figures climbed out.
Nothing unusual.
Then...
Emily leaned closer.
"Pause."
Ross stopped the video.
One of the men removed his glove for just a second while climbing the fence.
A large tattoo covered his wrist.
Thomas gasped.
"I know that tattoo."
Everyone turned.
"It belongs to Victor Lang's bodyguard."
Silence.
Detective Ross looked directly at Thomas.
"You're certain?"
"I've seen it dozens of times."
Ross immediately called headquarters.
"I need everything we have on Victor Lang."
Forty minutes later...
Ross returned carrying a thin folder.
He opened it.
"Victor Lang."
Age sixty-eight.
Former attorney.
Former shareholder in Harrison Construction.
Missing for twelve years.
Emily frowned.
"Missing?"
Ross nodded.
"He disappeared shortly after retiring."
Thomas laughed bitterly.
"He didn't disappear."
Ross looked up.
"What do you mean?"
Thomas slowly sat down.
"I think..."
He looked toward Ethan.
"...Victor planned this."
Ethan frowned.
"Planned what?"
Thomas took a deep breath.
"Everything."
Twenty-five years earlier...
Sarah had suddenly stopped hearing from Richard.
Letters disappeared.
Phone calls never connected.
Visits were canceled.
She believed Richard had abandoned her.
Richard believed Sarah had vanished.
Neither knew the other had been desperately trying to reconnect.
Only one man had handled all their legal documents.
Only one man knew every address.
Every phone number.
Every financial record.
Victor Lang.
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
"Why would he do that?"
Thomas answered with one sentence.
"Because Richard owned something Victor wanted."
Richard's construction company.
Twenty-five years ago...
It had been worth almost nothing.
Until Richard purchased one abandoned lakeside property.
Everyone believed the land was worthless.
Victor insisted Richard sell it.
Richard refused.
Six months later...
The property mysteriously caught fire.
Sarah disappeared.
Richard's life fell apart.
Victor quietly bought half the company.
Emily stared in disbelief.
"You're saying..."
Thomas nodded.
"It was never about love."
"It was about money."
At that exact moment...
Richard's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?"
A calm voice replied.
"Happy birthday, Richard."
Richard's blood ran cold.
He recognized that voice instantly.
Victor Lang.
"I've been dead for twelve years."
Victor chuckled.
"Apparently not."
Richard whispered,
"What do you want?"
Victor answered,
"What should have been mine."
Then the line went dead.
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
His worst nightmare...
Wasn't Ethan Carter.
It was the man he thought had died long ago.
And now Victor Lang had returned.
