Chapter 6 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—one of the fastest verdicts in the state's judicial history for a complex corporate and violent crime case.
When the judge called the court back to order, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Diane was weeping silently, her hands trembling. Richard sat frozen, staring blankly at the polished wooden table. Evan kept bouncing his leg nervously, his eyes darting toward the floor.
"Will the defendants please stand?" the judge ordered.
They stood up slowly, looking like broken shadows of the arrogant family that had once trapped me in my own foyer.
"On count one, aggravated assault and battery resulting in severe bodily harm, how do you find?"
"Guilty," the jury foreman read clearly.
"On count two, grand larceny and corporate embezzlement..."
"Guilty."
"On count three, witness intimidation and destruction of evidence..."
"Guilty."
The word repeated again and again, like a drum beat echoing through the silent courtroom. Guilty on all counts for Evan, Richard, and Diane.
The judge looked down at the three defendants with profound disdain before issuing the sentences.
"What I saw in that video footage was not merely a financial dispute, but a chilling display of cruelty and entitlement," the judge stated, his voice booming through the room. "You treated a human being—the very person who built your family's fortune—with utter contempt and violence."
He delivered the sentences one by one:
Richard Mercer was sentenced to twelve years in state prison for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and felony assault.
Diane Mercer was sentenced to eight years in prison for her direct role in the physical attack and attempted extortion.
Evan Mercer, for his role in coordinating the theft, participating in the conspiracy, and actively obstructing justice during the assault, was sentenced to ten years in prison without the possibility of parole for the first six years.
Furthermore, the judge ordered complete financial restitution. Every single asset owned by the Mercer family—their luxury estate, their cars, their personal bank accounts, and their investments—was seized to pay back the stolen $3.8 million, plus damages and legal fees.
As the bailiffs led them away in handcuffs, Diane broke down completely, screaming for mercy. Richard fell to his knees, sobbing openly as he was pulled up by the guards.

Evan turned back one last time to look at me as he was being ushered through the heavy steel door. His eyes were wide with terror, filled with the sudden, crushing realization that his entire life was over.
I stood up, adjusted my coat, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright sunlight, leaving them behind in the dark.
