Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The arrest of Evan Mercer and his parents sent shockwaves through the regional business community. Within forty-eight hours, the news was everywhere. Local papers and national business outlets picked up the story: Tech Logistics CEO Indicted in $3.8M Fraud and Violent Domestic Assault.
While Evan, Richard, and Diane were being held without bail pending their arraignment, I went to work from my secure location. I didn't hide. I didn't cower. I used my recovery time to execute the final steps of my plan.
First, I met with the remaining executive board members of Mercer Logistics via video conference. The room was filled with panicked men who had blindly followed Evan for years.
"Gentlemen," I said, my voice echoing clearly through their conference room speakers. "You have a choice. You can continue to align yourselves with a family that is facing up to fifteen years in federal prison, or you can cooperate fully with the restructuring team I have brought in."
"Claire," one of the senior directors stammered. "We had no idea Richard was siphoning funds. Evan assured us—"
"Evan assured you of many things because it was convenient," I cut in. "Here are the facts: the company's primary credit line was secured against my personal assets—assets that were unlawfully leveraged without my consent. Today, I revoked that collateral."
Gasps filled the board room.
"Without that collateral, Mercer Logistics is technically insolvent," I continued. "However, I have formed a new entity: Vanguard Global Infrastructure. I am offering a complete buy-out of Mercer Logistics' operational assets, contracts, and fleet. Every honest employee keeps their job and their benefits. But the Mercer name will be erased entirely."
They had no choice. The board voted unanimously to accept the acquisition within twenty minutes.
Meanwhile, Diane and Richard were realizing the full extent of their legal nightmare. Locked in separate holding cells, they turned on each other almost immediately. Richard claimed Diane was the mastermind behind the physical intimidation, while Diane claimed Richard forced her to participate to cover up his gambling debts.
Their high-priced defense attorney walked into their consultation room on the fourth day, looking exhausted. He placed a stack of papers on the table.
"I've reviewed the prosecution's evidence," the lawyer said grimly. "It is catastrophic. The video footage from the foyer is crystal clear. The audio captures every word, including Mr. Mercer Sr. threatening to break her other leg if she didn't sign."
"Can't we claim the video was altered?" Diane demanded, her gray hair messy, her expensive outfit wrinkled after days in custody. "She's a tech expert! She could have faked it!"
"The digital signature is cryptographically verified," the lawyer replied coldly. "Furthermore, the forensic accountants have a complete paper trail linking Richard to the offshore accounts. The D.A. is offering a plea deal, but it requires full restitution and significant prison time for all three of you."

"Prison?" Diane shrieked. "I am a prominent member of the community! I don't belong in prison!"
"Mrs. Mercer," the lawyer said, closing his briefcase. "You assaulted a woman, broke her bone in two places, and attempted to force her under duress to surrender millions of dollars. The judge assigned to this case is known for maximum sentencing in domestic violence cases. You are going to prison. The only question left is for how long."
