Chapter 8 - The Showdown at the Gates

The iron gates of the Duca estate stood like a formidable black barrier against the bright spring afternoon. Outside, three sleek black sedans idled, their engines rumbling aggressively. Standing in front of them was Marco Rossi—a tall, scarred man wearing an expensive white suit, flanked by twelve heavy-set enforcers holding submachine guns concealed beneath light coats.

Inside the gates stood Lorenzo Duca. He wore no armor, carried no visible weapon, and walked with the unhurried, terrifying calm of a man inspecting his own orchard. Behind him stood Paolo, four senior guards with tactical rifles held at low-ready, and Pino, whose black coat rippled with coiled muscle as he stared fixedly at Rossi.

"Lorenzo!" Rossi barked, spreading his arms wide with a mock-friendly grin that didn't reach his cold, dead eyes. "Look at you! Fourteen years at the top and you're still hiding behind wrought iron and bad coffee. I hear rumors say you've gone soft. That you're playing house with kitchen help and stray brats instead of running an empire."

Lorenzo stopped ten feet from the gate bars. He didn't smile. He didn't blink.

"You brought twelve men to my doorstep, Marco," Lorenzo said, his voice carrying clearly across the open asphalt. "Which means you either came here to die, or you are profoundly stupid. In either case, you're trespassing."

Rossi’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly snarl. "The truce is dead, Duca! You backed out of the marriage contract last year to play savior to a nobody. Without that alliance, your shipping routes in the south are open season. My men will burn your warehouses down by midnight, and then we'll come inside and see how brave that little maid of yours is!"

At the mention of Clara and Lily, the air around Lorenzo shifted into something lethal. Every guard behind him raised their weapons a fraction of an inch, the metallic clicks echoing like a death knell in the quiet afternoon.

Before Lorenzo could give the command to open fire, a small, clear voice rang out from behind him.

"Mr. Duca?"

Lorenzo didn't look back, but his shoulders relaxed just a millimeter. Lily had trotted out from the side path, her one-eyed rabbit clutched tightly in her left hand, with Clara following frantically behind her, trying to catch her.

"Lily, go back inside with Clara," Lorenzo said gently without turning around.

"Is that the loud man?" Lily asked, ignoring the order entirely, peering around Lorenzo’s long wool coat with wide, innocent brown eyes to stare directly at Rossi through the iron bars. "He sounds angry. Does he need a hug?"

A heavy, stunned silence fell over both sides of the gate. The hardened enforcers stared in absolute disbelief at the tiny four-year-old girl talking about hugs in the middle of a mafia standoff. Rossi’s face flushed a deep, furious crimson.

"Are you mocking me, Duca?!" Rossi screamed, drawing a heavy silver pistol from his shoulder holster and pointing it directly through the bars toward Lorenzo. "I'll blow your head off right here and—"

He didn't finish the sentence.

Pino didn't wait for a command. The 125-pound Doberman launched himself forward like a black missile, hitting the iron gate with a force that rattled the heavy hinges. He didn't bark; he let out a savage, guttural roar that struck primal terror into the heart of every man on Rossi’s team.

At the same time, Lorenzo’s hand flashed out with blinding speed, drawing his own weapon and placing a single, perfectly aimed shot that clipped Rossi’s pistol right out of his hand, sending it spinning across the asphalt.

Panic erupted among Rossi's enforcers. Three of them raised their rifles, but before they could fire, the surrounding trees and perimeter walls came alive with red laser sights pointing directly at their chests from the snipers stationed on the estate roof.

"Drop your weapons," Lorenzo commanded, his voice echoing with absolute finality. "Now."

Rossi, clutching his stinging right hand where the bullet had grazed his knuckles, glared in sheer horror as he realized he had walked straight into an execution trap disguised as a quiet driveway. Within seconds, his men dropped their submachine guns to the ground and raised their hands in surrender.
