Chapter 7 - Shadows from the Past

Spring arrived with a sudden burst of blooming hydrangeas and warm, golden sunlight that chased the winter chill from the gardens. Lily was four now, taller, braver, and running across the lawn with Pino bounding happily by her side, barking in joyous echoes that made Clara smile as she watched from the east wing balcony.
Lorenzo stood behind her, leaning against the wrought-iron railing, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.
"She's growing up too fast," Clara murmured softly, her hands resting on the cool stone. "I still can't believe this is our life, Mr. Duca. A year ago, I was ready to pack a single bag and walk out into the dark. Now... I feel like I'm living in a dream."
"It's not a dream, Clara," Lorenzo replied, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "You earned every inch of it. Your work keeps this house running better than it ever has in my father's time."
Before Clara could answer, the heavy oak doors of the back garden burst open, shattering the peaceful afternoon.
Paolo came jogging across the lawn, his face pale and slick with sweat, holding a silver tray with an urgent message. He stopped a few feet away from Lorenzo, breathing heavily.
"Boss," Paolo said, his voice trembling slightly. "We have a problem at the main security gate."
Lorenzo’s relaxed posture vanished instantly. The warmth in his eyes hardened back into the lethal focus of a syndicate boss. "What kind of problem?"
"It's Marco Rossi," Paolo said, uttering a name that made Clara gasp and step back in terror. "He’s released from federal custody up north. He claims... he claims that since your proposed marriage alliance fell through last autumn, the territory agreements are void. And... he brought a dozen armed enforcers to the outer gate. He’s demanding a parley, or he says he’ll take what he wants by force."
Marco Rossi was a vicious, unpredictable warlord from the neighboring territory, known for scorched-earth tactics and an absolute disregard for civilian life. The marriage meeting Lorenzo had slipped out of a year ago—the very meeting that had led him to Lily behind the trash bins—had been arranged to appease Rossi's bloodlust and secure an uneasy truce.
"He's at the gate?" Lorenzo asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"Yes, sir. And... he brought up rumors. He heard that you've practically turned your manor into a nursery for a maid and her child, and he’s using it as proof that you've grown soft."
Clara’s heart seized. She looked down at Lily, who was still happily chasing a butterfly across the grass, completely unaware of the storm brewing at the gates. "Mr. Duca... please. You don't have to protect us. If Rossi is here for you, let us leave—"
May you like
Lorenzo cut her off with a sharp wave of his hand.
"Nobody is leaving," Lorenzo said coldly. He handed his coffee mug to Paolo, straightened his jacket, and turned toward the grand staircase. "Paolo, assemble the inner guard detail. Load the security team. And someone..." He paused, looking down at the massive Doberman currently trotting up the steps. "...let Pino out of the kennel."
