Chapter 6 - The Darkest Hour Before Dawn

Three days before the board meeting, the storm finally hit.

It was two o'clock in the morning when the mansion’s security alarms shattered the silence of the night. High-pitched blares echoed through the hallways, accompanied by flashing red emergency lights.

I woke up instantly, pulling myself into my wheelchair with practiced speed. My heart hammered in my chest as I rolled out into the main corridor, calling out for Rebecca and Sammy.

"Ethan!" Rebecca’s panicked scream echoed from the west wing.

I navigated my wheelchair down the corridor as fast as I could. When I reached the top of the grand staircase, I saw two masked men in dark tactical gear struggling with Rebecca. Down in the foyer, another man had Sammy in his grip!

"Let him go!" I roared, the authority in my voice echoing off the marble walls.

The intruders froze for a split second. The man holding Sammy sneered, pulling out a silenced pistol. "Stay back, Caldwell! Marcus sends his regards. He said if you wouldn't sign the company over, maybe losing your little housekeeper and her brat would make you reconsider!"

Sammy was terrified, but when he saw me, he bit the arm of the man holding him with all his might!

"Ah! You little brat!" the man yelled, dropping Sammy.

"Run, Sammy!" I screamed.

In that split second of chaos, a shadow burst through the front double doors of the estate. It was Vance, accompanied by two armed private security officers I had hired to guard the perimeter!

Gunfire cracked—muffled pops of silenced weapons. Vance tackled the man who had held Sammy, pinning him to the floor, while my security team disarmed the other two intruders.

"Ethan! Watch out!" Rebecca shrieked.

One of the intruders who had escaped Vance’s initial sweep broke away and charged up the grand staircase directly toward me, drawing a heavy hunting knife! He thought a man in a wheelchair was an easy target, an easy hostage to turn the tables.

Adrenaline surged through my veins like liquid fire. My mind went entirely still.

As the attacker reached the top stair and lunged at me with the knife, I didn't cower. I grabbed the heavy brass floor lamp beside me, swinging it with every ounce of upper-body strength I had cultivated over weeks of agonizing training.

CRACK!

The heavy metal base struck the attacker solidly across the chest, throwing him off balance. He tumbled backward down the entire flight of marble stairs, crashing heavily at the bottom, unconscious.

Silence fell over the mansion, broken only by the heavy breathing of security personnel and the soft sobs of Rebecca.

Vance stood over the captured men, securing them with zip-ties, then looked up at me on the landing, his eyes wide with respect. "Nice swing, Mr. Caldwell."

I lowered the brass lamp, my body shaking from the massive rush of adrenaline. I looked down at my feet. In the commotion, without realizing it, I had planted both of my feet firmly on the ground and pushed off my wheelchair to generate maximum power for that swing.

I was standing.

Holding onto the wall for support, I stood upright on my own two legs for the first time in six months.

Rebecca gasped, covering her mouth. Sammy ran up the stairs, dodging past the captured intruders, and threw his arms around my legs.

"Uncle Ethan! You're standing! You're standing!" Sammy cried out with pure joy.

I looked down at the boy, tears streaming down my face—not tears of sorrow or despair, but tears of absolute victory. The nerve pathways, dormant for months, had fired under the extreme stress and intense determination. I sank back down into my wheelchair, wrapping my arms tightly around Sammy and Rebecca.

"We survived," I whispered, holding them close. "Vance, call the police. Make sure the Chief of Police handles this personally. It's time to put Marcus behind bars forever."
