Chapter 4 - The Resistance Within

The next morning, the heavy atmosphere of defeat that had suffocated the Caldwell estate was officially dismantled. I refused to spend another second staring at the lawn like a tragic statue.

I called for my physical therapy team—the very people I had violently dismissed weeks prior. When the lead therapist, Dr. Aris, walked into the home gym, he looked braced for another tirade. Instead, he found me sitting up straight, wearing athletic gear, waiting for him.

"Dr. Aris," I said directly. "I owe you an apology for how I treated you. I was bitter, broken, and blind. But that ends today. I need to know the absolute truth about my prognosis, without any sugar-coating."

Dr. Aris adjusted his glasses, visibly surprised. "Mr. Caldwell... the spinal cord injury is severe, yes. The nerve pathways are damaged, but they are not completely severed. The doctors Marcus brought in promised you'd never walk again, but frankly, their assessment was unusually pessimistic. With rigorous rehabilitation, neuro-stimulation, and sheer willpower... partial or even full recovery isn't impossible. But it will be excruciating."

"Pain is an old friend," I replied grimly. "Let's start."

For the next three weeks, my life turned into a brutal battleground against my own physical limitations. Every morning began with hours of agonizing physical therapy. I pushed through burning muscles, intense nerve pain, and sheer exhaustion. Whenever I felt like giving up, I would look across the gym where Sammy sat, drawing pictures of superheroes or reading his storybooks, occasionally shouting, "Go, Uncle Ethan!"

Having Sammy and Rebecca in the house changed the entire dynamic of the estate. The cold, sterile mansion began to fill with light, laughter, and the mouth-watering aromas of Rebecca’s cooking. The staff, who had previously walked on eggshells, now smiled and went about their duties with genuine joy. I was no longer just a bitter boss; I was becoming a guardian, a brother in spirit, and a man with a purpose.

Meanwhile, behind closed doors, Vance, Clara, and I were orchestrating a silent counter-offensive against Marcus.

Clara quietly gathered financial records from Caldwell Enterprises, exposing a massive web of embezzlement. Marcus had been channeling millions out of the company's innovation funds into offshore accounts, preparing to liquidate major assets as soon as he gained full power of attorney—which he was planning to execute at the upcoming Annual Shareholders’ Board Meeting in two weeks.

"He's moving fast, Ethan," Clara warned me over an encrypted video call. "Marcus has convinced the board that you are mentally unfit due to severe depression following the accident. He has drafted papers to declare you incapacitated."

"Let him think he's winning," I said, a cold, calculating smile touching my lips. "The more arrogant he becomes, the bigger his mistakes will be."

"What about Sammy?" Rebecca asked late one evening after putting the boy to bed. We were sitting in the living room, drinking tea. "If Marcus finds out who Sammy really is... that he is Julian’s heir and has a legitimate legal claim to a third of the Caldwell estate... Marcus will destroy him."

I reached across the table and placed my hand over hers. "I will protect Sammy with my life, Rebecca. He saved me from my dark night. I will build a fortress around him that Marcus can never break."

"He looks up to you so much, Ethan," she said softly, tears glistening in her eyes. "You have no idea how much you resemble Julian when you smile like that."

"I spent twenty years thinking I was alone," I said, looking at the family portrait hanging above the mantelpiece—a portrait that only showed me and my cold, distant father. "Now I realize I have a family worth fighting for. And Marcus is about to find out what happens when you corner a Caldwell who has nothing left to lose."
