Chapter 9 - A New Beginning

Six months later, spring had arrived in Manhattan. Central Park was blooming with cherry blossoms and tulips.

At the edge of the park, facing the green trees, stood a bright, sunlit townhouse.

Carol Garrison stood on the front steps, leaning lightly on a walking cane. Her cheeks were full and pink, her hair was growing back healthy and thick, and her eyes were clear. She wore a simple, elegant blue dress—a gift from Owen.

Lily came running out of the front door, wearing a brand-new bright yellow summer dress, her blonde curls bouncing around her shoulders. She ran down the steps and threw her arms around Owen, who was standing by the car holding a large box wrapped in red ribbon.

"Uncle Owen!" Lily giggled.

Owen caught her easily, lifting her high into the air before placing her gently on the ground. The man who had once been incapable of showing affection now hugged the little girl like she was his own daughter.

"Happy seventh birthday, Lily," Owen said warmly, handing her the box.

Lily opened it carefully. Inside was a framed picture. It was a photograph taken on Fifth Avenue—not of the tragic fall, but of a new plaque that Owen had commissioned and installed on the exact spot outside his headquarters building.

The brass plaque read:

"On this spot, a six-year-old girl named Lily proved that courage is not measured in size, and kindness is the greatest strength of all."

Below the plaque was a permanent pledge from Blake Meridian: a annual ten-million-dollar endowment funding medical care for low-income mothers and children across New York City.
