Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Truth

Owen knelt on the dirty floor of the pharmacy, unmindful of his tailored suit.

"Hello," he said softly.

Lily looked at him cautiously, instinctively clutching her tiny tin of coins against her chest. "Hi."

"Are you... did you call an ambulance a few weeks ago on Fifth Avenue?" Owen asked, his breath catching in his throat. "For a man who fell down?"

Lily blinked. She looked at his face, scanning his dark hair, his blue eyes, and the faint scar near his temple.

"You were the man in the blue suit," she said quietly. "Your lips aren't pale anymore."

A wave of emotion hit Owen so hard he had to place a hand on the floor to steady himself. The billionaire who had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions was rendered completely speechless by a six-year-old in a yellow outfit.

"It was you," Owen whispered. "You saved my life."

"You fell," Lily said simply, as if it required no further explanation. "Nobody was helping."

Owen looked at the counter, then at the crumpled bills in her tiny hand. "What is your name?"

"Lily."

"Lily," he repeated, the name tasting like a miracle on his tongue. "What are you buying, Lily?"

"Medicine for my mom," she said, her lower lip trembling for the very first time. "She's really sick, and the doctor man says I don't have enough dollars."

Owen stood up immediately and walked to the pharmacy counter. He pulled out a black American Express card and handed it to the stunned pharmacist.

"Fill every prescription this girl’s family has on file," Owen commanded. "Not just for today. For the entire year. Deliver them to her address."

"Sir, I..." the pharmacist stammered, looking at the card, then at Owen's face, recognizing him from the business news. "Yes, sir. Right away."

Owen knelt back down to Lily’s eye level. "Lily, where do you live? Take me to your mother."
