Chapter 7 - The Unseen Threat

By Saturday afternoon, the atmosphere in the Moretti mansion had shifted from open warfare to an uneasy, shifting truce.
The triplets hadn’t pulled a single prank in twelve hours. In fact, Noah had spent an hour asking Claire about how hotels worked, while Miles had quietly sat beside her on the living room sofa, handing her tools while she helped him fix the wiring on his remote-controlled drone.
Claire was sitting on the back patio overlooking the sprawling gardens, watching the boys kick a soccer ball around the lawn. For a brief moment, looking at them laugh and chase the ball, they looked like completely normal children.
Suddenly, the heavy iron security gates at the front of the estate buzzed loudly.
Inside the house, the atmosphere changed instantly.
Mrs. Gable dropped a stack of laundry in the hallway, her face turning completely pale. “Oh, dear God,” she whispered, wringing her hands.
Claire stood up from the patio chair, walking quickly toward the glass doors leading into the living room.
Adrian strode out from his study, his jacket off, the sleeves of his shirt rolled up, holding a heavy encrypted satellite phone to his ear. His face had gone hard as granite, every trace of paternal softness completely vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating aura of a mob boss guarding his empire.
“Lock the doors,” Adrian ordered without looking back, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “Get the boys into the panic room in the basement. Now.”
“What’s happening?” Claire demanded, stepping into the hallway as the triplets ran inside from the yard, suddenly terrified by their father’s tone.
“An unscheduled visit from people who don’t use the front gate,” Adrian said coldly, sliding a sleek black pistol from his holster and tucking it expertly into the waistband of his trousers. He looked down at his sons, then his dark gaze flashed toward Claire. “Take them downstairs. Do not come out until I unlock the door from the outside.”
“Dad, what’s going on?” Noah asked, his voice trembling as he grabbed the hem of Adrian’s shirt.
“Go with Claire, Noah. Now,” Adrian commanded, his voice brooking no argument.
Before Claire could herd the boys toward the basement stairs, heavy, shattering sounds echoed from the front foyer. The thick oak front doors, reinforced with steel, shuddered under a massive, violent impact.
Someone was trying to break in.
“Downstairs! Move!” Claire shouted, grabbing Caleb by the hand and pushing Noah and Miles ahead of her toward the service corridor leading to the basement.
The security alarms began to wail through the mansion, flashing a harsh, pulsing red light across the walls. Gunshots echoed from the front hall—sharp, deafening cracks that pierced the air and sent shockwaves through the quiet estate.
Adrian whirled around, drawing his weapon, his eyes locking onto Claire for a fraction of a second. There was no fear in his eyes—only cold, calculating fury and a sudden, terrifying flash of raw protectiveness.
“Keep them safe,” Adrian said over the sound of the alarms.

“Don’t you dare die out here, Adrian Moretti!” Claire yelled back over the chaos, shoving the boys into the stairwell before slamming the heavy steel security door shut behind them and throwing the deadbolt.
The battle for the Moretti estate had begun, and Claire Donovan was locked in the middle of it.
