Chapter 7 - The Brave Little Guardian

Maisy helped paint the treehouse. She chose bright turquoise for the walls and sunny yellow for the shutters. We put soft rugs on the floor, beanbag chairs, and shelves filled with books and games. We installed bright, solar-powered fairy lights along the path leading from the house to the treehouse, turning the once-terrifying dark into a magical, glowing corridor.

On her eighth birthday, we held a grand opening for the "Lighthouse"—the name Maisy chose for the treehouse.

My parents were there. My dad walked slowly down the deck steps with his cane, holding a small wrapped package for Maisy. Inside was a hand-carved wooden medal he had painstakingly crafted using his good hand. It was shaped like a heart, with a tiny pair of golden shoes carved onto the front.

"For... my... hero," my father said slowly, his voice thick with emotion as he placed the ribbon around her neck.

Maisy beamed, holding the carved wooden shoes tightly. "Thank you, Grandpa."

That night, for the first time in nearly a year, Maisy slept in her own room. She left her bedroom door open, listening to the soft sound of Theo babbling happily in his crib next door, knowing that her family was whole, protected, and near.
