Chapter 2 - The Secret in the Back Seat

The silence in the room became heavy, thick enough to choke on. The officer stepped forward, holding a second clear bag. Inside was an empty, unlabeled amber prescription bottle and a small, heavy silver key ring with a key I didn’t recognize.
"Mrs. Joanne was found unconscious on the kitchen floor by our responding units," the officer explained, his voice low and clinical. "She didn't leave the kids in the car out of neglect. She collapsed from an acute reaction to unprescribed sedatives. And when your father tried to reach the children after realizing what happened, he suffered a severe hemorrhagic stroke."
My blood ran colder than it had when Maisy emerged from the woods. I looked at my mother. Her eyes were red, hollow, and filled with tears of profound shame.
"I... I was in so much pain, Claire," Joanne sobbed, her voice barely a rasp. "My back... someone at the clinic gave me those pills. I thought it was just a strong painkiller. I took one while Curtis was taking a nap. I thought I had five minutes... I just went inside to lay down the groceries..."
She didn't know about Curtis’s stroke until the police broke down the door. She hadn't left my children out of malice, but out of a terrifying cascade of medical emergencies that had completely crippled both adults within minutes.
My heart was a battleground of rage and deep, aching sorrow. I wanted to scream at her for being so careless with unprescribed medicine, but looking at her broken frame, and knowing my father was currently in the ICU fighting for his life, the anger began to mix with terrifying reality.
"Where is Dad?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"In surgery," the detective said gently. "They're trying to relieve the pressure on his brain."

Maisy reached out from her hospital bed, her small, bandaged hand clutching my sleeve. "Is Grandpa going to die, Mommy? He looked so scared when he tried to grab me."
I sat on the edge of her bed, pulling her into my lap, careful of her scratches. "No, baby. Grandpa was trying to help you. He was sick, but the doctors are taking care of him now."
