Chapter 8 - The Power of Story

Three years later, Maisy was ten, and Theo was a rambunctious four-year-old who loved nothing more than chasing butterflies through our backyard garden.

Maisy’s experience had shaped her in ways that were nothing short of miraculous. She had become an advocate at her school, joining a peer-support group for children dealing with family illness and trauma. Her school counselors frequently remarked on her empathy and her innate ability to comfort children who were going through difficult transitions.

One evening, I walked past her bedroom and saw her sitting at her desk, typing furiously on her laptop.

"What are you working on, writer?" I asked, leaning against the doorframe.

"A story," she said, turning around with a bright smile. "Dr. Evans said that when something scary happens to you, writing it down gives you power over it. It makes you the author, not the victim."

"Can I read a little bit of it?"

She nodded proudly, pulling her chair back so I could see the screen. The document was titled: The Girl Who Outran the Shadows.

I read the opening paragraphs. She had detailed the heat of the car, the fear in her chest, and the weight of her brother in her arms. But she hadn't written it as a tragedy. She had written it as an epic adventure—a tale of a sister who discovered she possessed the strength of a lion when her family needed her most.

"The woods tried to trip her," the text read. "The thorns tried to hold her back. But she was faster than the fear, because love is the heaviest thing in the world to carry, but it also gives you the strongest legs."

Tears pricked my eyes as I read her words. My daughter hadn't just survived; she had triumphed. She had taken the worst day of her life and spun it into a narrative of absolute empowerment.

"It's beautiful, Maisy," I choked out, pulling her into a tight hug. "It’s the most beautiful story I’ve ever read."

"I'm going to dedicate it to Theo," she whispered into my neck. "And to you. Because you caught us when we fell."
