Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Light

Ten years after the afternoon that changed everything, a large white tent stood in our backyard, decorated with thousands of twinkling fairy lights. The scent of sweet jasmine from our garden filled the air, mixing with the laughter of dozens of guests.
It was Maisy’s graduation party. She had graduated at the top of her class, receiving a full academic scholarship to study Child Psychology at a prestigious university.
I stood near the edge of the patio, holding a glass of champagne, watching my daughter weave through the crowd. She wore a beautiful emerald green dress, her blonde hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. The faint, silver scars on her forearms—now barely visible unless the light hit them just right—looked less like injuries and more like badges of honor.
Theo, now a handsome, athletic fifteen-year-old, walked up to her, holding a large box wrapped in silver paper. He was a head taller than her now, a complete reversal of the day she had carried his limp body through the brush.
"Happy graduation, Mai-Mai," he said, his voice deep but filled with the same warmth he had possessed as a baby.
Maisy tore open the paper to reveal a beautifully bound, hardcover book. My breath caught in my throat as I saw the title embossed in gold foil on the front cover: The Girl Who Outran the Shadows by Maisy Vance.
"You had it published?" she gasped, her eyes filling with tears.
"With Mom’s help," Theo smiled, wrapping his long arms around her in a massive bear hug. "I figured the world needed to read about my hero. Plus, you need a good textbook for when you become a doctor."

I walked over, joining their embrace, pulling my two incredible children close to my heart. We stood there together at the edge of the garden, right where the white fence separated our sanctuary from the wild woods beyond.
The sun finally dipped below the horizon, and the fairy lights overhead flared to life, casting a warm, golden glow over the entire yard. The woods behind us were dark, but we no longer feared the night. We had faced the deepest shadows the world could throw at us, and together, we had transformed them into a legacy of light, courage, and an everlasting, triumphant love.
