Chapter 8 - Fires of Truth

With Vance and Pendelton in federal custody, the truth swept through the community like a cleansing fire. The school district board convened an emergency session to formally lift Ray Collins' suspension, wiping his employment file completely clean of all past infractions and issuing a public, unanimous apology for the rush to judgment.

At the hospital, Eli’s health improved dramatically over the next two days. The combination of proper hydration, rest, and the lifting of the constant fear he had carried his entire young life brought color back to his cheeks.

Andrew stayed by his bedside every single hour, leaving only to finalize legal arrangements and coordinate with the state child welfare services.

On Friday morning, Detective Dana Brooks entered the hospital room carrying a thick blue legal folder.

"The state database has been corrected," Dana said with a warm smile, handing the paperwork to Andrew. "The fraudulent death record for Eli Turner has been permanently expunged. His legal identity is fully restored."

She looked at Eli, who was watching her intently. "And because your mother left clear notarized guardianship instructions in her secure server file, and because Andrew’s DNA test returned a ninety-nine point nine percent match, the family court has expedited the paperwork."

Andrew looked down at the document. It was a formal certificate of paternity and legal custody, bearing his name and Eli's.

Tears welled in Andrew’s eyes as he looked up at the boy. "You don't have to run anymore, Eli. You're safe. You're home."

Eli looked at the paper, then at Andrew. For the first time since he had been pulled from the foggy, suffocating interior of Bus 18, a genuine, joyful smile broke across the young boy's face.

"Can I... can I call you Dad?" Eli asked softly.

Andrew knelt beside the bed and wrapped his arms gently around his son. "I would like that more than anything in the world."
