Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

That evening, a heavy storm rolled over the county, bringing torrential rain and howling winds that knocked out power lines across the western suburbs. Jefferson Middle School was plunged into darkness, its backup generators humming weakly in the basement.

Inside the precinct, Detective Brooks set a trap. She deliberately leaked a false police report to the district IT network, stating that the physical evidence recovered from Bus 18—specifically the secondary heating bypass control module—was being stored temporarily in the security office at Jefferson Middle School prior to formal state forensics transfer the following morning.

She knew Vance would be desperate to destroy that physical piece of hardware before state forensic experts could analyze it for fingerprints and DNA.

At 9:00 PM, a dark SUV pulled into the rear parking lot of Jefferson Middle School, creeping past the fence without lights.

A figure in a heavy raincoat stepped out, holding an electronic master key card. The lock on the school's side door clicked green, and the figure slipped quietly inside the pitch-black hallway.

Inside the quiet school, the atmosphere was suffocating. Shadows stretched long across the polished linoleum floors. The figure moved with practiced familiarity toward the administrative wing, his heavy footsteps echoing softly in the empty corridor.

He reached the security office, pulled a heavy crowbar from beneath his coat, and prepared to force the door.

Suddenly, the hallway floodlights snapped on, blinding him with searing white light.

"Step away from the door, Marcus," a voice called out over the public address system.

Superintendent Marcus Vance shielded his eyes, lowering the crowbar. Standing at the end of the long hallway was Ray Collins, holding a heavy iron flashlight, flanked by Principal Andrew Hale.

"You ruined my life seven years ago with that mark on my record," Ray said, his voice echoing off the lockers as he took a firm step forward, unbothered by his limp. "And yesterday, you tried to turn me into a child killer."

Vance’s expression hardened from shock into cold, calculated arrogance. He dropped the crowbar with a loud clatter. "You're a retired bus driver, Ray. Nobody cares about your reputation. And Andrew... you always were too noble for your own good. You could have lived a quiet life. Now you've dragged your bastard son into this."

Andrew took a step forward, his fists clenched, his eyes blazing with a fierce protectiveness. "Do not speak his name."
