Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Gala

The grand ballroom of the Grand Horizon Hotel was a dazzling spectacle of crystal chandeliers, cascading floral arrangements, and glittering evening gowns. Wealthy philanthropists, corporate titans, and society elites mingled beneath the vaulted ceilings, holding flutes of champagne and discussing their latest business ventures.
At the center of the room, standing beside a magnificent ice sculpture, was Elena Vance, the prominent socialite and heiress to a massive real estate fortune. Dressed in a stunning crimson designer gown that drew every eye in the room, she was holding court with a group of admiring acquaintances.
"I heard the charity auction tonight features a rare vintage diamond necklace donated by the Reed family," one of the socialites remarked, adjusting her diamond-encrusted earrings. "Do you plan on bidding, Elena?"
Elena gave a sophisticated laugh, sipping her champagne. "Naturally. My family has always supported the Children’s Hospital. Besides, one must maintain standards at these events. Can you imagine if they started letting just anyone into these galas? Last year, some minor tech blogger showed up in a tweed jacket. Utterly dreadful."
The group chuckled in agreement, reinforcing their exclusive circle.
Near the entrance of the ballroom, the heavy oak doors opened, and a hush fell over the immediate vicinity—not because of a loud announcement, but because of the quiet elegance of the arrivals.
Daniel Reed walked into the ballroom wearing a classic tuxedo that fit him impeccably. But it wasn't Daniel who caught everyone's attention; it was the little girl walking beside him.
Mia was wearing a miniature version of a classic evening dress—a soft, midnight-blue velvet dress embroidered with tiny silver stars that caught the light with every step she took. Around her neck, resting delicately against the dark fabric, was the small silver star necklace she had chosen the previous week. She held her father’s hand with one hand, and tucked under her other arm was a small, immaculately clean white plush rabbit.
Whispers rippled through the crowd.
"Isn't that... Daniel Reed?" one executive whispered, leaning toward his colleague. "I thought he never attended these social functions."
"Who is the little girl?" another asked. "I didn't even know he had a daughter."
Elena Vance turned her head toward the entrance, her sharp eyes narrowing slightly as she took in the sight. As someone who had tried unsuccessfully for years to secure a business alliance—or a personal introduction—with the elusive billionaire CEO of Reed Global Holdings, seeing him walk in holding a child’s hand sent a jolt of shock through her system.
Daniel paid no attention to the murmurs. He knelt down slightly to adjust the collar of Mia’s dress, whispering something that made her giggle softly.
"Are you having fun, sweetheart?" Daniel asked.
"Yes, Daddy. It looks like a fairytale castle," Mia whispered back, her eyes wide as she looked up at the towering chandeliers.
"Come on, let’s go find our table," Daniel said, standing up and guiding her gently through the crowd.
As they walked past the group of socialites, Elena stepped forward with a practiced, radiant smile, blocking their path.
"Mr. Reed," Elena purred, extending a manicured hand. "What an unexpected and absolute delight to see you here tonight. I am Elena Vance. My father and yours shared several board seats back in the day."
Daniel stopped, looking down at her outstretched hand before shaking it briefly and politely. "Ms. Vance. Good evening."
Elena’s eyes flicked down to Mia, taking in the little girl's velvet dress and the plush rabbit. A condescending flicker crossed Elena’s face, though she quickly masked it with a polite, patronizing smile.
"And who is this little darling?" Elena asked, using a high-pitched, sugary tone that sounded entirely fake. "Did you bring your doll to the big people's party, sweetie?"
Mia shrank back just a fraction, instinctively tightening her grip on her plush rabbit and reaching out to hold her father’s hand more firmly.
Daniel’s expression, which had been neutral and polite, hardened instantly. The memory of Vanessa Price in the jewelry store flashed briefly in his mind. He stepped half an inch forward, placing himself between Elena and his daughter.
"Her name is Mia, Ms. Vance," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a low, controlled register that carried an unmistakable edge. "And she is my daughter. She brought her favorite toy, which happens to be very important to her."
Elena blinked, sensing the sudden chill in the billionaire’s demeanor. She tried to laugh it off, waving a dismissive hand. "Oh, of course! How sweet. I simply meant that children can sometimes find these formal charity events a bit... overwhelming. My foundation frequently hosts children’s galas where toys are checked at the door, you see."
"My daughter stays where I am," Daniel said coldly. "And she is welcome anywhere I go."
Before Elena could scramble for a recovery, Mr. Whitmore appeared smoothly at Daniel’s side, holding a leather portfolio.
"Mr. Reed, the charity committee chair is ready for your opening remarks on the main stage whenever you are," Mr. Whitmore said, pointedly ignoring Elena as if she were completely invisible.
"Thank you, Mr. Whitmore," Daniel replied, looking down at Mia with a warm, comforting smile. "Shall we go on stage together, birthday girl?"
Mia’s face lit up. "Can I hold your hand while you talk?"
May you like
"Of course you can."
As Daniel and Mia walked toward the grand staircase leading to the stage, leaving Elena standing stunned and humiliated in the middle of the ballroom, the whispers among the crowd shifted from curiosity to absolute awe.
