Chapter 10 - Under the Same Stars
Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the house had grown wonderfully quiet, Daniel stepped out onto the wide wooden balcony on the second floor. The night air was cool and crisp, carrying the gentle scent of autumn leaves.
The city skyline stretched out before him in a dazzling sea of twinkling lights, stretching upward toward the vast, starlit expanse of the night sky.
Footsteps sounded softly behind him, followed by the familiar rustle of a small velvet dress.
"Daddy?" Mia’s sleepy voice broke the quiet.
Daniel turned around with a tender smile, kneeling down as Mia padded out onto the balcony wearing her pajamas, clutching her trusty white plush rabbit in one arm and rubbing her eyes with the other.
"Hey, sweetheart. Shouldn't you be asleep?" Daniel asked softly.
"I couldn't sleep yet," Mia whispered, walking up to him. "I wanted to look at the stars with you."
Daniel wrapped his arms around her, lifting her up so she could rest her head against his shoulder. He looked up at the glittering constellations overhead, the very stars that had inspired her birthday necklace a year ago.
"Look, Daddy," Mia pointed a small finger toward the brightest cluster in the sky. "That one looks like Mommy's drawing. And the one next to it... looks like us."
Daniel felt a lump form in his throat, but it was no longer a lump of sorrow or regret. It was a profound, overwhelming sense of gratitude and peace. He kissed the top of her head, tightening his embrace.
"Yes, sweetheart," Daniel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "That’s us. And we're going to be just fine."
From the doorway of the balcony, Sarah stepped out into the cool air, draped in a light knitted shawl. She walked over quietly, wrapping her arms gently around both of them from behind, resting her cheek against Daniel’s shoulder as they all looked up at the endless sky together.
