Chapter 9 - The Firefighter and the Magic Shoes

It was a crisp autumn evening. The leaves outside the mansion had turned shades of amber and gold, swirling across the twelve acres of lawns under a clear, star-studded sky.
Adrien sat in his private study, reviewing the final restructuring documents of the corporation. The door was open wide—a small detail, but one that symbolized the complete dismantling of his old life.
Footsteps approached the doorway, pattering softly against the hardwood floor.
Adrien looked up. Zoe stood in the doorway, wearing her yellow duck pajamas, holding Bear by one arm. Her hair was messy from sleep, and her big dark eyes looked up at him with sleepy affection.
"Uncle Adrien," Zoe whispered, rubbing her eyes with a fist. "Can you read me a story? Mama is making tea."
Adrien closed the billion-dollar merger contract without a second thought. He stood up, walked across the room, and scooped the little girl up into his arms, resting her head against his shoulder just as he had done on that rainy Tuesday night three months ago.
"Of course, little one," Adrien said, carrying her toward the comfortable armchair near the fireplace. "What story do you want to hear tonight?"
May you like
"The one about the brave firefighter and the magic shoes," Zoe mumbled, already half-asleep against his chest.
Adrien smiled, a deep, peaceful smile that reached his eyes, chasing away every remaining shadow of the cold boy who had followed two coffins into the ground twenty years ago.
