Chapter 3 - The Green Crayon and the Gold Signet RingThe private study on the third floor of the Greystone mansion was a fortress within a fortress. No servant entered without permission; even Marcus Vance, Adrien’s head of security and second-in-command for fifteen years, knocked twice before crossing the threshold. Yet tonight, the massive mahogany desk was covered not with shipping manifests or offshore accounts, but with a box of assorted colored crayons and a stack of white printer paper.

Zoe sat comfortably in the oversized leather armchair that usually swallowed visitors whole. Her face and hands were scrubbed clean, and she wore a fresh pair of pajamas featuring small yellow ducks. She was deeply focused on a sheet of paper, her tongue poked out slightly between her lips as she clutched a green wax crayon with a tight, determined fist.

Adrien sat on the edge of his desk, watching her with an intensity he usually reserved for reviewing contract negotiations.

Grace stood a few feet away, her hands clasped tightly in front of her apron. "Mr. Romano, I assure you she won't wander into the shoe room again. I’ll keep her by my side every second—"

"Stop calling me Mr. Romano, Grace," Adrien interrupted softly. He poured a cup of warm milk from a silver pitcher and slid it across the desk toward the little girl. "You stay here as long as you need. Both of you. The staff quarters are being remodeled next week anyway; I’m moving you into the west wing suite."

Grace stared at him in disbelief. "Sir? The west wing? That’s—that’s where family stays."

"Exactly," Adrien said, his gaze drifting back to Zoe.

At that moment, a heavy knock echoed through the study. The door opened without waiting for an invitation, revealing Marcus Vance. Marcus was fifty-two, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his silver-streaked hair brushed back with military precision. He carried a leather portfolio tucked beneath his arm.

"Adrien, the staff said you returned early. I brought the documents regarding the port authority renegotiations—" Marcus stopped dead in his tracks as he saw Grace and the child sitting near the desk. His eyes narrowed for a split second, a micro-expression of cold calculation flashing across his face before he smoothed his features into a warm, professional smile. "Ah. I didn't realize you had guests."

"They aren't guests, Marcus. They’re family now," Adrien said quietly, sliding off the desk and walking toward his second-in-command.

Marcus blinked, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his eyes. For fifteen years, Marcus had been the only man Adrien trusted completely. Marcus had stood beside him at his parents' graves, managed the transition of power after the betrayal by Isabella, and personally executed the men who had leaked their routes to the rival syndicates. If Adrien trusted anyone with his life, it was Marcus Vance.

"Family," Marcus repeated, stepping further into the room. His eyes briefly locked onto Zoe, who had stopped coloring and was staring intently at him with wide, unblinking eyes. "Well, that is... unexpected. But if you say so, Boss, it must be right."

Zoe suddenly dropped her green crayon. She picked up a purple one, but then stared down at the drawing she had just completed with the green crayon. It was a chaotic scribble of a long, twisting shape—a green snake with jagged teeth and a small, distinct circle near its tail that looked remarkably like a watch or a ring.

She pointed a tiny finger at Marcus. "The bad man has the green snake," Zoe whispered loudly in the silent room.

Marcus’s polite smile didn't falter, but a muscle in his jaw twitched. "What did the little princess say?"

"Nothing," Adrien said, though a cold spark ignited in the deep pit of his stomach. He looked down at the drawing. It was just a child's scribble. But Zoe’s eyes were fixed entirely on the gold signet ring resting on Marcus’s right index finger—a custom ring featuring an engraved coil of ivy that looked eerily like a serpent.
