Chapter 9 - Reckoning at Dawn

Three days later, the financial markets of the Eastern Seaboard experienced an unprecedented earthquake.
Within seventy-two hours, three major pharmaceutical conglomerates and shell corporations linked to the underground genetic syndicate had their assets frozen, their executive boards arrested by federal authorities, and their encrypted servers dumped onto public domains by an anonymous digital strike force known only as The Harbor Ledger.
The mastermind behind the takedown operated from a secure, undisclosed medical facility overlooking the cliffs of Maine.
Inside a sunlit room, the floor was free of wheelchairs.
Caleb Marino stood by the large bay window, walking with a slow, deliberate, cane-assisted stride. His legs ached with every step—a sharp, living pain that he welcomed more than any comfort he had ever known.
The door opened softly, and Julian walked in carrying a tray with two mugs of hot cocoa. Behind him came Lily, wearing a bright yellow raincoat and muddy sneakers that tracked water across the pristine wooden floor.
"Doctor says you're walking too much," Julian said, setting the tray down on the table. "He said you need to rest."
"Doctors spend too much time calculating what cannot be done," Caleb replied, turning around with a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth.
Lily walked straight up to him, stopping just inches away. She looked down at his shoes, then up at his face.
"You're taller than the statue," she observed seriously.
Caleb knelt down—with some effort, his knees protesting the movement—until he was at eye level with her. The cold, calculating Harbor King was gone, replaced by a father who had finally found the missing piece of his soul.
"And you," Caleb said softly, tapping the tip of her nose with his finger, "have too many questions for an eight-year-old."
"I'm smart," Lily corrected him, grinning. "And I brought my speaker."
Before Caleb could protest, the upbeat, impossible rhythm of American pop music filled the quiet medical room once more.
May you like
Julian groaned and covered his ears, while Lily grabbed Caleb’s hand, pulling him forward.
And there, in the sunlight streaming through the glass, the man who had calculated the end of the world learned how to dance.
