Chapter 6 - The Secret Beneath the Floor

In the dim, battery-powered amber glow of the panic room, Julian clutched his knees, his breathing ragged and shallow. Lily sat cross-legged on the carpet, humming a tuneless melody she had heard from the music box in the study.

"Quiet, Lily, please," Julian begged, his eyes fixed on the reinforced steel door. "They're going to hear us."

"They won't," Lily said softly, poking at a small keypad embedded in the stone wall near the bookshelf. "The man with the angry face said this is his house. Bad guys never win in their own houses in the stories."

"This isn't a story," Julian whispered, a tear slipping down his cheek. "We're trapped."

Suddenly, a hidden latch clicked. The back wall of the panic room—a section lined with historical ledgers—swung outward, revealing a narrow, descending stone staircase illuminated by faint blue LED strips.

Marcus stepped out from the shadows of the tunnel, his weapon drawn and his expression grim. "The study is compromised. We're moving through the old drainage tunnels to the boathouse. Move, now."

Julian didn't need to be told twice. He grabbed Lily’s hand and pulled her toward the passage. But Lily hesitated, looking back toward the door that led to the main study where the sound of gunfire still reverberated.

"He's still out there," Lily said.

"We have to go!" Julian urged, pulling her into the cold concrete corridor.

Marcus took up the rear, sealing the panic room behind them with a heavy mechanical crank that jammed the locking pins into place. "Mr. Marino is holding them off," Marcus said into his tactical radio as they descended into the damp underbelly of the estate. "Sir, we're in the transit tunnel. Status?"

Through the static of the receiver, Caleb’s voice came back, strained but unyielding: "Get them to the water. Do not stop for anything. I'm right behind you."

Marcus knew the truth, and it weighed like lead in his stomach: Caleb couldn't walk. He wasn't right behind them at all. He was buying them time with his life.
