Chapter 7 - Confrontation in the Shadows

“Leah! Stop right there!” Nathan shouted, his voice cracking with a mixture of panic and righteous fury as he spotted them near the laundry racks. “You’re only making things worse! Mom is trying to help you!”

Leah stopped dead in her tracks, turning to face him. The dim fluorescent lighting cast harsh shadows across Nathan’s face, stripping away the polished veneer of the successful suburban husband and revealing the weak, terrified boy beneath.

“Stay away from us, Nathan,” Leah said, her voice echoing steadily across the concrete floor.

“Leah, please,” Nathan pleaded, taking a cautious step forward while the two security guards spread out to flank her left and right. “Dr. Rusk has the legal papers right here in my briefcase. You’re unwell. You don’t know what you’re doing.”

“I know exactly what I’m doing,” Leah fired back, stepping backward so her hip brushed against the stainless steel frame of a laundry cart. Her eyes locked onto her husband with a cold, piercing intensity. “I know you traded your own son’s future to secure Doreen’s approval and a larger cut of the family estate. I heard every word you and your mother whispered outside that supply room door.”

Nathan flinched as if struck across the face. For a fraction of a second, his eyes dropped downward, guilt flickering across his features before he forced his expression back into a rigid mask of denial.

“That’s a delusion, Leah,” Nathan stammered, raising his hand defensively. “You’re fabricating things in your head.”

“She isn’t fabricating anything, Mr. Carver,” a calm, steady voice cut through the hum of the washing machines.

From behind a towering stack of canvas hampers, Simone stepped out into the light.

Nathan and the security guards stared in shock. Simone wore her hospital-issued silk robe over comfortable walking shoes, her dark hair tied back in a simple clip. In her hand, she held an open smartphone, its screen recording video with a blinking red light.

“What are you doing here?” Nathan demanded, staring at her in disbelief. “You’re supposed to be in room 402.”

“I got bored of staring at the ceiling,” Simone replied smoothly, stepping closer to Leah’s side. “And I figured out a long time ago that rich, controlling families love using private maternity pavilions to bury inconvenient scandals. Fortunately, my legal team has a standing court order requiring an independent wellness check on any patient moved to Suite 404 without a judicial signature.”

She tapped her phone screen. “And every single word of your little family conspiracy—including your confession about the guardianship transfer and the financial motives behind it—has been livestreamed directly to my personal attorney and three major investigative journalists in downtown Columbus.”

Nathan’s face drained of all color. He looked from Simone to Leah, realizing with sudden, crushing horror that their carefully constructed trap had completely disintegrated.
