Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Grace

The delivery room was filled with the soft, golden light of a winter afternoon.
Lily pushed one last time, her fingers gripping mine with a strength that no longer surprised me. She was a warrior.
At 3:14 PM, a loud, healthy cry echoed through the room.
The doctor lifted a beautiful, perfect baby girl, her skin pink and glowing, her dark hair wet against her forehead.
"She's here, Adam," Lily wept, her face shining with a beauty that took my breath away. "She's finally here."
The nurse placed the baby on Lily’s chest. The little girl instantly quieted, her tiny hand reaching out to rest against her mother’s skin, just as she had done from inside the womb.
I leaned down, wrapping my arms around both of them, my tears falling freely onto Lily’s shoulder.
"What should we name her?" I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.
Lily looked up at me, her eyes clear, filled with a deep, unbreakable peace. "Grace. Her name is Grace. Because she brought us through the dark."
"Grace Vance," I murmured, kissing my daughter’s tiny forehead.
We stayed in the hospital for three days, wrapped in a cocoon of love and quiet joy. No phone calls from Eleanor disturbed us. The world outside our room didn't matter.
When we finally brought Grace home, the apartment was warm, filled with the scent of fresh flowers I had ordered. We walked past the mantle, where our wedding photo stood in its warm oak frame, reflecting the three of us in its polished glass.
I watched Lily sit in the rocking chair by the window, cradling Grace against her chest, singing a soft, sweet lullaby as the snow began to fall gently outside.
I knew then that the shadows of the past were gone for good. We had walked through the fire, we had faced the doubts and the monsters, and we had come out into the light.
I walked over, kneeling beside the chair, and placed my hand over Lily’s, our fingers interlocking over our sleeping daughter.

"I love you, Lily," I whispered.
"I love you, Adam," she replied, her eyes meeting mine with a love that was absolute, pure, and forever whole.
