Chapter 1 - The Dark Mirror

My name is Adam.

And before that moment, I would have sworn I knew the woman living beside me.

I had been out of town for work for three days.

I was meant to come home the next night, but my meetings ended early. I changed flights at the last minute, clinging to the innocent idea of surprising her.

During the entire trip, she was all I thought about.

Lily.

Her round belly that slowed her steps.

Her smile, even when she was tired.

The way she had started placing her hand on her stomach before falling asleep, as though she were already comforting our baby in the silence.

I loved her enough to want to surprise her.

And, somehow, not enough to see clearly when it mattered most.

When I entered the Chicago apartment, the living room was completely dark.

Only a faint strip of light came from our bedroom.

I placed my bag by the door and moved forward silently, carrying the soft excitement of a man about to reunite with the woman he missed.

Then I reached the bedroom doorway.

And froze.

Lily was curled on the bed’s edge with her back toward me.

She wore her silk nightgown.

But it was backward.

The seams showed at the collar.

For a second, my mind refused to make it strange.

Maybe she was exhausted. Maybe it was pregnancy clumsiness. Maybe she had changed in the dark and simply didn’t care enough to correct it.

Then my eyes dropped to the floor near her feet.

There was our large silver-framed wedding photo, shattered into jagged sparkling pieces. The glass was smashed across the rug. On the silver frame, bright and terrible against the white carpet, was a fresh crimson streak of bl00d.

A shiver passed through my entire body.

I didn’t move.

My heart pounded so violently I thought it might wake her.

Then the thought came.

Cruel. Filthy. Unstoppable.

“Women have secrets, Adam. Make sure you aren’t being played for a fool.”

My mother’s toxic warning from weeks ago came back as if she had whispered it directly into my ear.

What if someone had been here? Had they f0ught? Had Lily broken our wedding photo in a guilty, desperate outburst?

I hated myself for thinking it.

This was Lily. My wife. The mother of the baby I had been dreaming about.

But once the p0ison entered, it spread fast.

The backward nightgown. The broken glass. The ruined wedding photo.

My imagination filled every silence with something worse.

A stranger leaving in a hurry.

A secret nearly exposed.

A betrayal cleaned up too late.

Then the thought I hated most:

What if the baby wasn’t mine?

I stood there for sixty long seconds.

A full minute.

I let jealousy hold me still while I put my wife on trial inside my own head.

My fists tightened until my nails marked my palms.

I wanted to wake her. Question her. Force the truth out.

But then Lily shifted on the bed.

Not softly.

Not peacefully.

Like someone being dragged out of a nightmare.

Her hand clutched her belly.

A small, broken, wet gasp escaped her mouth, and my whole body went cold.

“Lily…” I whispered.

She turned toward me.

Her face was gray-pale and soaked with cold sweat. Her hair clung damply to her skin.

And the expression in her eyes was not guilt.

Not surprise.

Not fear of being caught.

It was pain.

May you like

Pure, blinding pain.

She blinked at me, fighting to focus, and in a trembling voice I will never forget...
