Chapter 8 - The Clean Sweep

The security guards Greer had requested arrived precisely three minutes later, standing tall and silent at the open boardroom doors. They didn't need to say a word; the expression on Landon’s face and the trembling fury of Evelyn made the situation entirely clear.
Harper Quinn was the first to move. Realizing her corporate career, her stolen shell company assets, and her social ambitions had evaporated in less than twenty minutes, she grabbed her leather portfolio, avoided eye contact with everyone in the room, and practically ran down the executive hallway toward the private elevators, her heels clicking in frantic, sharp rhythms against the floor.
Evelyn lingered for a moment, glaring daggers at Greer with a look of pure, unadulterated venom. “You haven’t won, Greer,” she hissed under her breath as she swept past her toward the exit. “We’ll see what the family courts have to say about custody when we expose your medical instability.”
“My medical records are pristine, Evelyn,” Greer replied calmly without blinking. “And my custody filings already include your text messages attempting to lock a mother out of her own home. Have a terrible afternoon.”
Landon remained seated at the head of the table for a long moment after his mother left. His shoulders were slumped forward, the polished executive veneer completely shattered, leaving behind a small, pathetic man staring down at a ruined empire. He looked up at Greer with eyes that held a desperate, pathetic plea for mercy.
“Greer… please,” Landon whispered, his voice cracking. “We have a daughter. We can figure this out. We don't have to destroy our family like this.”
Greer looked down at him, feeling neither anger nor hatred, only an immense, profound indifference. The man sitting across from her was a stranger—a coward who had tried to steal her child and erase her life while smiling to her face.
“Our family was over the moment you let another woman wear my mother’s earrings in my nursery, Landon,” Greer said quietly. “My lawyers will be handling all communication from here on out. Don't ever come near me or June again.”
She turned away from him without waiting for an answer, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows of the executive suite.
Below her, the city stretched out under the bright autumn sun, vast, sprawling, and full of infinite possibility. Maddox House was entirely hers again, unburdened by deceit, fraud, or anchors that tried to pull her down.
Rachel Sloan walked over and stood beside her, looking out at the skyline with a satisfied smile. “Well, that was thoroughly efficient. The forensic audit will take a few weeks to trace every dollar diverted to HP Strategic Holdings, but asset freezing orders are already in place. They won't be able to touch a dime.”

“Thank you, Rachel,” Greer said softly, taking a deep breath of clean air. “For everything.”
“Don't mention it,” Rachel smiled, patting Greer’s shoulder. “Now, let’s go home. There’s a little girl waiting for her real mother.”
