Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

"Cut the feed! Cut that screen right now!" Grant bellowed, his voice cracking as he scrambled up the steps toward the AV booth, abandoning all pretense of corporate dignity.
Three burly corporate security guards, acting on standing instructions from Arthur Vance himself, intercepted Grant before he could reach the control panel. They didn't tackle him, but their massive arms crossed in front of the stairs formed an immovable wall.
"Mr. Whitmore, step away from the stage access," Arthur Vance ordered, his voice booming through the microphone with thunderous authority. He stood up from his table, his cane tapping sharply against the polished floor. "Security, escort Mr. Whitmore to the holding room behind the east wing. This gala is paused pending an immediate emergency board session."
Chaos erupted in the ballroom. Investors were shouting questions, journalists were snapping frantically, and whispered rumors rippled through the rows of tables like wildfire.
I walked slowly down the central aisle, the heavy velvet of my gown sweeping smoothly across the carpet. Every eye in the room was locked on me—some filled with pity, others with shock, but all of them burning with curiosity.
Arthur Vance intercepted me near the base of the dais, his weathered face grave. "Clara," he said quietly, his voice laced with profound disappointment. "Is this what I think it is? Did he really divert company resources to fund a separate household while your son was in crisis?"
"Worse, Arthur," I replied, meeting his gaze unflinchingly. "He committed insurance fraud, falsified legal dependency declarations, and abandoned a critically ill child to play hero for another family. All while using my father’s legacy as a stepping stone."
Arthur’s jaw tightened into a hard line. He turned toward the stage microphones, raising a hand to quiet the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced, his voice echoing with absolute finality. "Tonight’s scheduled leadership vote is indefinitely suspended. An internal compliance and legal audit of Whitmore Health Solutions is effective immediately. Mr. Grant Whitmore is hereby suspended from all executive duties pending a formal review for fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and corporate malpractice."
Across the room, near the rear exit, I caught a sudden flash of movement. Madison Cole, who had apparently managed to slip into the gala's outer lobby hoping to catch a glimpse of Grant’s triumph, stood frozen by the glass doors. Her face was stark white, her expensive dress looking suddenly cheap under the harsh corridor lights. When our eyes met, she turned and bolted out the exit into the night.
