Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The grand ballroom of the Whitmore Plaza Hotel was a glittering spectacle of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and expensive perfume. Executives, board members, major shareholders, and local politicians mingled beneath soaring ceilings, laughing and clinking glasses in anticipation of the evening's announcement.
When I stepped through the double doors at 8:05 PM, a hush seemed to ripple through the immediate vicinity. Whispers followed my path. Word had clearly leaked that there was domestic friction in the Whitmore household, and society columnists were desperate to see how the disgraced founder’s daughter would handle her public humiliation.
Instead of shrinking away, I walked with my chin held high, my gaze fixed straight ahead.
Grant spotted me near the edge of the dais. He was surrounded by a cluster of senior vice presidents and major investors. Seeing me in the midnight-blue gown—radiant, composed, and entirely unbothered—made his breath catch. He excused himself from the group and strode over, his jaw tight beneath his immaculate shave.
"What are you doing here?" Grant hissed under his breath, grabbing my elbow with a grip that was entirely too tight for polite company. "I told you to stay home. You look... why are you dressed like that?"
"You didn't really think I'd miss your coronation, did you?" I murmured back, slipping my arm smoothly out of his grasp without breaking my smile. "After all, you worked so hard to get here. It would be rude not to witness the grand finale."
"Clara, listen to me," Grant warned, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "If you try anything tonight—if you cause a single ripple—I will make sure you never see a dime of the family trust. I’ll drag you through a custody battle that will leave you broken."
"Threats, Grant? In a room full of securities lawyers?" I raised an eyebrow, gesturing slightly toward a table where three board members were watching us with curious expressions. "Smile. People are looking."
Before Grant could respond, the lights in the ballroom dimmed, and the deep, resonant chime of a microphone feedback echoed through the hall. The master of ceremonies stepped onto the illuminated stage, smiling brightly.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and members of the Whitmore Health family," the announcer boomed. "Welcome to our annual leadership gala. Tonight, we celebrate a legacy of healing, innovation, and unwavering dedication. But before we announce our new Chief Executive Officer, we have a very special presentation regarding the future of our corporate governance and family leadership."
Grant straightened his tie, shooting me one final, venomous glare before turning toward the stage with a practiced, winning smile, ready to accept his crown.
