Chapter 9 - The New Normal

Six months later, the Bennett-Grant household was a place of joyous, beautiful chaos.

The hospital felt like a distant memory, though its shadow remained as a reminder of how precious everyday moments truly were. Ivy’s hair had begun to grow back in soft, dark curls, and her energy had returned tenfold. She was back in school, arguing with her classmates about math problems and keeping a watchful eye on Theo during weekend playdates.

Nora had transitioned into a new role as well, working part-time while building a life that felt safe, stable, and full of laughter.

And Elias—Elias had learned how to cook lasagna without setting off the smoke detector, much to Theo and Ivy’s continuous relief.

On a warm Saturday evening in late May, the backyard of Elias’s suburban home was bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. String lights flickered overhead among the branches of the old oak tree. A small white table was set for four, though tonight was a celebration for just the three of them—plus one very important addition.

Ivy sat at the head of the table, wearing a silver tiara that Theo had insisted was mandatory for the occasion.

Elias walked out from the kitchen carrying a large silver tray, setting it carefully in the center of the table.

“Smells edible,” Ivy noted critically, leaning over to sniff the air.

“It is gourmet, thank you very much,” Elias protested with a mock-serious expression, pulling out Nora’s chair before taking his own seat beside her.

Nora looked around the table, her heart swelling with a deep, abiding peace. She looked at Theo, who was busy trying to balance a breadstick on his nose; she looked at Ivy, glowing with health and vibrant energy; and finally, she looked at Elias, whose dark eyes held all the devotion and steadfast love she had ever hoped to find.

“To new beginnings,” Nora said softly, raising her glass of sparkling cider.

“To difficult not meaning impossible,” Ivy added, raising her cup with a triumphant grin.

“Hear, hear,” Elias agreed, clinking his glass against theirs.

The glasses chimed softly in the evening air, a clear, sweet sound that carried away the ghosts of the past and welcomed in a future that was bright, unending, and profoundly happy.
